We have a (if I may add quite beautiful) template called Messagebox. It seems to be a reworked version of the messageboxes that we see all over the wiki, such as Template:Cleanup and Template:Obsolete. However, the latter infoboxes just use table styling, and are not actually using the messagebox template to create their layout. I'd like to see this be more standardised across the wiki. Therefore I want to bring the following points to a vote.

Chuck it?: Is it at all necessary to keep the messagebox template, if no template is using it? Or would it be worth reworking all table-styled messageboxes into this template? Note that using the messagebox template has the advantage that it adds Category:Messageboxes to all relevant templates, so that they are categorised nicely. You can vote to keep it if you want the other messagebox templates to use Template:Messagebox, or chuck it if it should be deleted, in which case you don't have to vote for the other points.

Looks: The messagebox template looks significantly different from the current messageboxes in use on the wiki. If the template is kept and used to standardise the rest of the templates, should it keep the style that we're all aware of (solid box that contains all the content with a slightly darker border) or the new style (highlighted "title" bar, no specific background on the rest of the content)? You can vote new looks to adopt the way that Template:Messagebox looks now, or old looks if you want it to be reworked to better match the style of the current templates we use.

I've probably forgotten another choice you can make on the matter: Having only two points up there seemed a bit few, so have another one. If you have ideas on other things to vote on, please do chuck them into your comments!

Discussion

Keep it, new looks - as thread creator User talk:ThePsionic.png: RS3 Inventory image of User talk:ThePsionic ThePsionic Special:Contributions/ThePsionic.png: RS3 Inventory image of Special:Contributions/ThePsionic 19:12, 17 April 2021 (UTC)

Question - what about backwards compatibility and ease of use for the new version of the template? Currently, if I want to request a speedy deletion, I just need to put the following:

 • This article is obselete

With the current version of the message box, it's currently recommending I do something like below:

 • |

If you're proposing that the Messagebox template be used as a back-end, so that the short and simple This article is obselete still works by pre-populating certain parameters, then I would say keep and rework it for ease of use. Comment - If you're suggesting that the other templates such as D or Obsolete use it (so that nothing would change in how those templates are called on the pages) than I say keep it to standardise the others. I think I prefer the current styling for the templates, vs that on Messagebox. Also the messagebox template would need a param that lets it set categories on pages (since many of the current messagebox style templates set categories). Note that Messagebox would only internally be used to provide a standardised way of making message boxes in general. Categories would still be able to be added onto the templates where required. I just think something like
<noinclude></noinclude>
is cleaner, easier to use, and better in the long run than just doing the alternative on every such template:
<includeonly>{}</includeonly><noinclude></noinclude>

I'm not sure how doable this is if multiple categories are involved - the messagebox template is wikitext, not a module, and passing multiple things to Ctg might prove to be quite a challenge. That shouldn't be a problem really. Ctg accepts multiple categories separated by the pipe character (|). Farming-icon.png Salix of Prifddinas (Talk) Prifddinas lodestone icon.png 08:35, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

Further comment - I also strongly recommend reason, source, type, subject into 1 param called secondary or something like that and have the other templates specify which parts are vars and/or bold etc, since those are all specific to a given Messagebox type template and not all of them. Keep it and old looks - That is all. :P Farming-icon.png Salix of Prifddinas (Talk) Prifddinas lodestone icon.png 07:44, 19 April 2021 (UTC)

Closed - I created this template and it was put forward as a finished product out of the blue. Nothing about it is final yet, including the design and parameters - I will make a new thread at a later date when it's ready. Iiii I I I 08:34, 19 April 2021 (UTC)
