We have far too many infoboxes for locations.

OSW combines all of these into a simple osrsw:Template:Infobox Location.

I propose that we do the same and move any type specific parameters such as dig site managers or mine rocks, etc to their own databoxes on the pages. This will greatly help towards the ongoing effort of cleaning up the excess infoboxes we have. Lava hawk.png BlackHawk (Talk)    21:18, 16 August 2021 (UTC)

Support, comment - I initiated discussion on this mostly with city & dungeon infoboxes in mind, but doing it for everything makes sense too - some of those infoboxes feel dated and rigid in terms of parameters, while also largely overlapping with area infobox. Having one extensive infobox for all locations would allow more standardisation but also flexibility and across the board improvements. Below are some specific suggestions on parameters. As most will be irrelevant to a lot of articles, they should be hidden by default (when empty), as i.e. number of banks/altars won't matter in article about a river or agility course.

  • Kingdom - rename to region as most parts of the map aren't actually kingdoms and the wording makes it unnecessarily limiting/inaccurate.
  • Location - most of those infoboxes miss it, would be useful to specify location more precisely than just by region, i.e. specific island or city for a building article.
  • Levels - I don't think it's particularly useful for most dungeons, makes sense for buildings if the infoboxes were to be merged.
  • Altars/banks/obelisks - takes too much visual space in current form and would look better if it was arranged in one row like i.e. stats/affinities in monster infobox. Especially since they are not as important as they used to be. Maybe add a button that generates advanced map showing pins for all of them in the area like for monster spawns?
  • Cannon - should remain in general infobox, as it could apply to more than dungeons.
  • Race - displayed as "inhabitants" in the infoboxes, might be worth unifying. Similar to kingdom race is often inaccurate/limiting.
  • Guilds - not sure if needed at all, there is very few guilds in game and I'm not sure anyone would look for them this way.
  • Strongest monster - personally I don't consider this particularly useful, it would probably be better to replace it with "bosses" which makes more sense for GWDs and EDs but also some other locations with i.e. quest bosses.
  • Music - should stay, but for some reason this one isn't even part of city infobox despite documentation stating otheriwse.
  • Quests - could remain for specific locations that are used primarly/entirely in some quest or are unlocked in one, but probably not worth adding if a location is featured in more, especially for common areas. Oher than that access requirements could be listed in databox for convenience anyway, as that could also cover other requirements.
  • Capital - used for kingdom/region articles only but should stay.
  • Mountains - same as above but used much more rarely and pretty arbitrary, doesn't feel important enough for infobox.
  • Source/Mouth/Falls/Crossing/Shortcut - exclusive to river infobox. Should either remain separate infobox (as it has the most unique parameters) or that info could be moved to databox.
  • Merged infobox should retain versioning like Area one so i.e. dungeons can have images of both the entrance (or at least main/one of them) and interior and similarly an int map of the entrance and possibly interior (though we already have advanced maps for those). Could also be useful to some buildings. Mariobaryla (talk) 22:24, 16 August 2021 (UTC)

Support - On top of the proposed changes I would like to see much less clutter in the boxes themselves. So if a location doesn't have music then it shouldn't be displayed as an option to be edited. I also appreciate a lot of what Mariobaryla suggested, they have similar ideas as myself. Kosmiklove (talk) 22:38, 16 August 2021 (UTC)

Port at sea - Good suggestion. Farming-icon.png Salix (Talk) Prifddinas lodestone icon.png 22:46, 16 August 2021 (UTC)

Support - I would suggest showing missing params with a ?edit link, but hiding them with no or similar for most params. I think there should also be a param to link to a section for maps (I imagine most of these will have an {{Advanced map}} on the page), and also a map param for the entrance (I think it needs a header more than just the map) Seers headband 2 chathead.png Elessar2 (talk) 19:46, 17 August 2021 (UTC)

I also think that Altars/banks/obelisks/excavation spots/mining rocks etc should all be 1 row in display, and possible one param, that just shows icons and numbers, with a link(s) to the appropriate page section. Something like:

Support and comment - For the Infobox mines and Infobox excavation site, there are some DPL templates that are connected to the specific usage of that template, so if those two specifically are replaced, then we should probably implement databoxes for that information and update the DPL there instead. Good point, especially with all these infobox rework we should do insource searches to double check for dpl and the like. Seers headband 2 chathead.png Elessar2 (talk) 08:39, 19 August 2021 (UTC)

Support - I feel like the set up of the OSRS infobox would work equally as well for us. Magic logs detail.pngIsobelTalk page 12:49, 19 August 2021 (UTC)

Support - Parity between Wikis makes sense and the OS one is superb! :D Talk to me ShaunyMy contributions 20:23, 20 August 2021 (UTC)

Closed - there is consensus to merge the listed infoboxes to form a single location infobox with other information being moved to databoxes as per the old school wiki. Interested editors should be able to work out the exact details amongst themselves. Magic logs detail.pngIsobelTalk page 12:46, 3 September 2021 (UTC)
