The removal of player editing to the Jagex Wiki brought this up in a recent email to Jagex from Mod Matthe:
"I was about to email you on a similar matter though – we are excited about the greater flexibility this change gives us with regards to how we work together. As part of this therefore we're really keen to chat to yourselves about how we can better support you and work with your team much more closely."

Hello, some of you may be aware that we've been attempting to set up a meeting with Jagex ever since the removal of player editing to the Jagex hosted wiki. The last time we've talked to Jagex through Skype was two years ago with Mod Lods at the helm. I've already asked some administrators on their thoughts and if they could attend.

To proceed with this meeting, what day, Tuesday through Friday (21-24 April), next week works best for those joining in the Skype meeting as well as what time is best. Note that it would be best within the span of 10:00 UTC to 3:00 UTC. Since this meeting will be over Skype and that I would like to have three or four others with me in the conversation with Jagex. It would be best to have this answer in the next 24 hours to get back to Jagex on the time we would like this setup.

Now I understand that this may be a little out of the ordinary, using the Yew Grove to address a small section of users, but I want to get the community and editing base to know this is occurring and I would like their input into what should be brought up that during the meeting. I would like to know if at least the following users can attend the meeting:

  1. Cqm
  2. Gaz Lloyd
  3. Spineweilder
  4. TyA

Once the discussion ends, I plan on adding all relevant information where applicable which is most likely this thread. Cheers, Ryan PM 12:06, April 16, 2015 (UTC)

Discussion[edit source]

Comment - I am available Tuesday and Thursday 6pm-11pm ( US Central Time ) and can probs do Wednesday anytime after 2pm (US Central time). Friday is a no-go for me as I have to get ready for work as soon as I get out of classes. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 12:20, April 16, 2015 (UTC)

Friday is a bit meh for me too, since I have to leave for my meeting at 14:30 BST (13:30 UTC) - I think; it might be Thursday at 10:00 BST (9:00 UTC), I'll have to check with my professors. Tuesday and Wednesday are fine at any time (as well as whichever day isn't my meeting). Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 13:37, April 16, 2015 (UTC)

Question - You've only described it as a meeting with Jagex. Does that just mean MattHe, or will there be others? Temujin 13:27, April 16, 2015 (UTC)

I know that it will be between us and at least Mod Matthe. I suspect others in the same team will be on the call as well. Ryan PM 13:28, April 16, 2015 (UTC)

not me? - wooooooooooooooow u a jerk MolMan 13:35, April 16, 2015 (UTC)

Comment - Anyone that wants to read the emails should contact me through Chat or IRC. They will have some sanitizing and do not post elsewhere. Ryan PM 14:21, April 16, 2015 (UTC)

Comment - Unfortunately, I'm really busy all of that week between work and other commitments (there's a possibility I might end up with some free time, but I'm not able to promise anything). I'm happy to provide a list of requests, but as this is a preliminary meeting perhaps it's best to limit what we ask of them to more general queries. cqm 22:08, 16 Apr 2015 (UTC) (UTC)

Comment - Hey all, I'm a games community staff member here at Wikia and we'd love to have one of our team sit in on this meeting to answer questions if you'll have us. We wouldn't be wrangling it in any way, just there to provide answers/help should the need arise. We'll be able to work around whatever time you decide on.

I wouldn't mind that happening, however the time of day set for it would be around 6AM EST to 11AM EST due to Jagex being on BST in Cambridge, UK. If it comes to it we will reschedule it for a more appropriate time since those I had intended to be in the call are going to be absent. Ryan PM 01:54, April 17, 2015 (UTC)
Sounds sweet. (: sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 02:32, April 17, 2015 (UTC)
Great! Most of our staff is in California, so any time after 3PM(15:00)BST would be optimal, but we may be able to work with the current time. Just to clarify, the meeting is April 23rd (Thursday) at 9:00UTC(10:00BST), correct? Michael <staff /> (profile)•(talk)•(email) 16:38, April 20, 2015 (UTC)

Comment - Pending Jagex's reply, the meeting has moved to next week in the hopes of being more suitable to fellow editors. Ryan PM 00:20, April 21, 2015 (UTC)

Sounds good, thanks for the update!

Just checking in one more time for a Skype invite. One of our team members, Jorge, should be able to attend the meeting tomorrow. If you could email him at [email protected] he'll send you his Skype info. Thanks again!
Michael <staff /> (profile)•(talk) 22:55, April 27, 2015 (UTC)
I have sent Jorge an email regarding the call, albeit rather early in the day (it's 5:32AM for me) and very close to the meeting time. Also fixed indentation for flow. Ryan PM 10:39, April 28, 2015 (UTC)

Agenda[edit source]

I think it would be good to have a list of topics we want to discuss with Jagex (either in this meeting or in the future). My ideas so far are:

  • Ask about image attribution where Jagex utilises our images - I realise they own the copyright to these, but it's extra advertising for us and it's be nice to see the efforts of those who take the images to be recognised. A recent example can be seen at [1]
  • Add CORS headers to the jagex APIs - This is mainly going to be used in 2 scripts at the moment, MediaWiki:Gadget-gemwupdate.js and MediaWiki:Gadget-calc.js. In both cases we rely on a 3rd-party site to send the request server side and then relay the result back to us. Ignoring the security issues on our end, it allows jagex to have finer control over who access their APIs and how they handle those that abuse them, e.g. sending too many requests in X amount of time.
  • Add more APIs - Currently, we have GE data, bestiary data (which is actually wrong for something, I can't remember what off the top of my head) and individual player hiscores (which is in CSV format at the moment, as opposed to the more common JSON or XML). Other APIs, such as quest and task completion status for each player or hiscore lists, i.e. attack hiscores in order of rank, would be great to see in the future.
    • Just thought of another that would be good: GED data, i.e. current price, category, value, (anything we can use when setting up exchange pages). Basically an item's data we get from the GED currently, but in an API rather than having to scrape the HTML. cqm 07:35, 21 Apr 2015 (UTC) (UTC)

Feel free to improve or add to the above ideas. cqm 10:21, 18 Apr 2015 (UTC) (UTC)

Regarding the image attribution, if we're going to have a partnership of some sort I don't really see attribution as necessary. Legally it's not required, I don't think it's really going to get us much advertisement (and we don't really need it to begin with), and it's just an unnecessary point of contention. When we had a more (for lack of a better word) adversarial relationship, it was something we let ourselves get worked up about. If we're friends now, and have more of a partnership going forward, it's such a minor issue that I don't think is worth worrying about, especially when it detracts from the much more important things we could ask for (like your other two points). ʞooɔ 23:04, April 18, 2015 (UTC)
Perhaps you're right, but until we know exactly what Jagex are willing to offer I think it's worth considering. It's not like we have to ask about it immediately, it can quite easily wait until a later date. cqm 10:02, 19 Apr 2015 (UTC) (UTC)
At the same time, if we're friends, it might be easier to get. MolMan 13:04, April 19, 2015 (UTC)
If we're friends now, maybe we should push for image attribution for that purpose. They want to help fansites more, here is their chance. In any case, simply talking about it shouldn't be a problem, and I see no reason to not bring it up. sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 17:23, April 20, 2015 (UTC)

In game title - [Name] the Wikian to all major editors. Yes pls. Demand it. MolMan 12:25, April 18, 2015 (UTC)

Psychotic robot pet pls. User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 18:55, April 18, 2015 (UTC)

Jagex accounts - Following from Forum:JMod Accounts and Forum:Jagex-paid editors, do we want to encourage Jagex to make an account (or many accounts), rather than just editing from their IP like they sometimes do? If so, do we want to make use of (and will Wikia allow us to make use of) the authenticated usergroup? Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 15:55, April 21, 2015 (UTC)

Good point -- this recent exchange would indicate it's certainly worth a mention. Ronan Talk 16:42, April 21, 2015 (UTC)

@helring @Fswe1 We got grief last time a Jagex IP edited the wiki >_> but point taken

    helring ‏@helring Apr 10
@moltare @Fswe1 I didn't know you got grief over editing the wiki, sounds weird since you'd think people would want the info.

    AJ ‏@moltare Apr 10
@helring @Fswe1 The gist was 'this is a player-edited wiki, gb2/yourown/' but I'm sure that's not majority opinion. Second-hand story anyway
Above is an indication that someone who didn't bother to read the proposals before reacting is the one who related the incorrect "second-hand" account to the Jmods. Oh, well. The point of those proposals was that Jagex editors have a conflict of interest editing here, which they should acknowledge, and that they should be treated the same as any other editor (i.e., not better). But people went ape-shit in opposition to the possibility that Jmods were the same as mere humans. So, yeah, someone should probably clear that up. --Saftzie (talk) 23:18, April 21, 2015 (UTC)
I'm curious where this happened, because I've not seen this happen with the known Jagex IPs. Unless he's talking about Joey's warning from 3 years ago. Which makes no sense, because Moltare has edited since then... MolMan 23:41, April 21, 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, I think Moltare is mistaken...nobody to my knowledge has ever warned someone at Jagex for editing the "player-edited wiki", the only thing we do is try to follow up on people who claim to be from Jagex, and make sure they're not doing anything with a conflict of interest. ʞooɔ 00:12, April 22, 2015 (UTC)
