When a website applies to Jagex for consideration in being officially recognized as a "Runescape Fansite," there are a few places that application is sent to. One of those places is my office.

Now, I love this place. I think it performs a great service for both the paying and free member alike. I have been watching you guys since I was notified of your presence some time ago. That being said, I also love my career. I am at odds in giving this information to you, however... You don't need to know my reasons...

I will note that I am using a proxy server and I am not at my work or home computer. I believe I look like I am connecting from somewhere in North America. I am taking every precaution I can.

You guys are never going to be an official fansite. I know you have speculated in the past that this was true. Here is the main reason why:

The Runescape Game Guide; Jagex doesn't want our members coming to this site for quest help, skill guides, spoilers, etc. Your site is so greatly maintained and full of information, that it is in direct competition with our game guide. We do not want them coming here for this information - we want them to come to us.

Pretty petty, eh?

Also - it was brought to our attention that you have articles that describe/have described events or items that have not yet appeared in-game.

To Jagex, a fansite is a website that only celebrates the game - it doesn't add extra game content or provide a service. Jagex looks at your website the same way they look at third-party software.

That is all. Please take this message as you will; believe it or don't. I just wanted to shed some light on this so maybe you guys can move on and get out underneath Jagex's thumb (i.e. Stopping yourselves from publishing something on the site in fear of Jagex not considering you as a fansite. They never will).

Thank You.

Request for Closure / Comment - The entire point of fansites is to give help, every other approved fan site has quest guides, skill guides etc. If your argument is infact true then why don't you update your own game guides to be the best available on the web ? What more is there to discuss ? Unfortunately I can't believe you, there is no evidence that you work for Jagex or any related companies. To use the colloquialism, I call BS. Veritas vos Liberabit 13:03, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

Agreed. Closure required; thread is irrelevant whether or not there is some factual basis. Chief Snake 13:12, January 16, 2010 (UTC)
I'd also just like to say that I personally don't think the Wiki is under Jagex's thumb so to speak. As Degenret once said, the day this Wiki is under influence of jagex or any other company is the day that the Wiki itself ends. Veritas vos Liberabit 13:15, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

comment - Wow...and more wow. I expect some here will be "suspicious" of such a thread, yet I myself find it fair enough. If it is indeed his job to check out fan sites, and he takes it seriously, it is easy to see how he would know the different aspects of our community such as the yew grove. To me it says he was being thorough in investigating us. I really hope that this is from a Jagex employee, even if he can't identify himself (And I fully understand the whys and have zero problems with it) because for once its some straight talk. Which is what many of us wanted all along. And I feel even better about how awesome we are that some of Jagex is jealous lol. We so own XD. Thanks "MrJohnny84".--Degenret01 13:08, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

I'm also really tired and I'll reread/rethink this when I wake up.--Degenret01 13:10, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Definitely bs. Cap and goggles.pngTEbuddy 13:15, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Well this is surprising. I sort of believe this, but at the same time, I don't. It does seem Bs that Jagex won't make us be an "official RuneScape fan site". I mean aren't fan sites suppose help out players with information? :S I think we are pretty much the same as other fan sites. (Just talking about fan site in general, not really in details like community) Santa hat.png Powers38 おはようヾ(´・ω・`) 13:24, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I think this is a sham, and that Mrjohnny is not a RuneScape employee, If he is, then he shouldn't be reluctant to show some proof, if he has any, again I think this is a user who is working upon our goals and being extremely brazen with the hope that it might actually work. Comment - I'd like to bring to the discussion that "Johnny" only created an account for the sole purpose of this post: Special:Editcount/Mrjohnny84. I am unsure if it is fake or not. As powers said, fansites are supposed to help out the community and stuff. But if this is true, it means Jagex wants the reins. They want to be independent and take full control of all RuneScape content on the internet. They want to have their articles only. They want their quest help only. They want their userbase visiting their site only. i'm really over this bloody discussion about Jagex and Mod Hobhein recognising us. We don't need to be part of their "elite group" of fansites. I don't think users go look for Jagex's "Approved fansites" list. They type "runescape" into Google and we win out of all fansites at #4. Chicken7 >talk 14:14, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Agreed, and I've been through a lot of fan sites. The information in this wiki is par with other sites; linking and editing the articles makes puts it above the rest. Leftiness 01:01, January 17, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Does Jagex really think that their Game Guide is helpful? It only offers the most basic information; even new players probably move on to better guides after reading the limited information that the Game Guide contains.  Tien  16:24, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

In their mind, their creations are perfect. Chicken7 >talk 16:34, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Fansites like and Sal's Realm are given official status, and have game guides. I seriously doubt that is the issue here, nor is it much of a problem for Jagex that we write commentaries on how to complete quests. If the RS Wiki were to disappear and close down tomorrow, all of the reasons given above wouldn't matter as they are being done on recognized sites.

As far as I'm concerned, this posting here is a fake and this discussion can be closed. Hod Hobhein, who does have authority over fan websites and is confirmed to be a Jagex employee has already addressed this issue in an official capacity and offered the reasons for why we don't qualify to be recognized. We've had that discussion, and this supposed "employee" didn't even have the courtesy to address that previous concern either (or bother reading the previous forum discussions about this issue). If Jagex has anything to say about this issue, they know who to contact and it will be as an in-game message or via the Jagex internal messaging system. Jagex has warned about this kind of behavior, and there is no reason to expect that Jagex would ever contact us in this fashion.

Jagex is into control, and they insist that anything that happens on fan websites happens only with their approval. What Jagex fears is independent thought and policies. We should strongly discourage rule breaking, but that isn't the same thing as being critical and writing content that would normally be removed from the official forums. --Robert Horning 16:46, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - He's encouraging us to stop trying? Nice try, Mister Johnny, but your petty attempt at sabotaging us will not work! >:o We would be highly interested in knowing who you're REALLY working for... 17:25, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I don't believe you are who you say you are. As a Jagex employee or as a hired hand, you would not disclose this information, no matter what precautions you take as this would jeopardize your employment, not something one would take lightly to offer info to a humble fansite. That said, it's still a point to ponder.

Comment—Noting a few things about this post: In the last sentence, the writer refers to Jagex as they, not as we, which is how I would expect a Jagex employee to refer to his own company. In the first sentence, he uses the American spelling of recognized. I could be wrong, but I believe a Jagex employee probably would use the British spelling of recognised? Also, he puts punctuation inside the quotation marks, which is the American style. The British style is to put punctuation outside the quotation marks.Horsehead Talk 20:01, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - While I, like the others above, am skeptical whether this is real or a hoax, I prefer to look at it like this: if he's being truthful, Jagex (if only one employee) thinks we're awesome; if false, we have another fan of the wiki. Win-win, to me. Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 20:31, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

Request to ban MrJohnny for Jagex staff impersonation and possible planned "sabotage" of the wiki...or whatever someone said. - This is ridiculous. Just ban the troll already and move on. 7kyt1iT.gif --WINE OF GOOD HEALTH (Actually Stinko) 20:51, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

Request for Closure-[1] Why is he taking so many precautions to prevent us from seeing where he really is? I call foul. He has knocked four times. 20:54, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

This should have been closed - We have NO proof that the user "MrJohnny" works at Jagex. I mean he doesn't have a point... Are they jealous because our guides are better? If so... lol... By the way, he uses american spelling. Makxtrl Talk 22:24, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Wikia is looking in to the official fansite business: This is most certainly untrue. Wikia's working hard to get the RS wiki on the list. Mark (Talk) • (Contribs) 22:41, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

wikia doesn't need to be working on this, we submitted the name of this site, Jagex said no. There is no further action to take. Wasting time effort and energy on this helps no one, including us. Tell wikia thanks but not to bother with whatever they are doing. Which I don't know what that could be anyhow.--Degenret01 00:38, January 17, 2010 (UTC)
Agreed. We don't need to be on Jagex's "holy list" anyway. In my eyes, they're manipulating us into bowing down to them and removing all controversial topic or anything that's banned in their forums. We are not Jagex and I simply don't believe they will make us an approved fansite. FunOrb Wiki did not have controversial information. Chicken7 >talk 01:18, January 17, 2010 (UTC)
@Degenret: Didn't Jagex not approve us because Wikia had ads for other MMORPGs? White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 01:28, January 17, 2010 (UTC)
That's what they told Robert Horning, but several wikians have their suspicions that it's false, and they have an ulterior motive. ~ Fire Surge icon.png Sentry Telos Talk  03:24, January 17, 2010 (UTC)
What motive? That our wiki isn't a "celebration" of their game? White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 03:37, January 17, 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, when I said "motive" I meant "reason". Several wikians have mentioned that Jagex may not be recognising us for other reasons, such as controversial stuff like Forum:RuneScape Model Viewer = Against the rules. ~ Fire Surge icon.png Sentry Telos Talk  08:28, January 17, 2010 (UTC)
The reason is the ads, yes. That's what being worked on. Though that isn't simple. Mark (Talk) • (Contribs) 16:55, January 17, 2010 (UTC)

Fake - Am I reading this correctly? We won't be a fansite because it's better than your Game Guide? White partyhat old.png C Teng talk 23:06, January 16, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Well. To be honest, I really don't care about being one of the "supported" fan sites anymore. We know that we have a lot of information, we have a lot of fans, we have a lot of editors, we have a great community, etc etc etc. Santa hat.png Powers38 おはようヾ(´・ω・`) 02:18, January 17, 2010 (UTC)

Why I believe that this is fake:

  1. The security measures that he took are not needed. With check user, you will only be able to view down to the general area that the ip is located in (so it would say cambridge), of which there would be dozens, even hundreds of Jagex employees in the area.
  2. There are only about a dozen approved fansites, so it would be stupid for Jagex to employ multiple employees to create a list which can only be seen in on one thread. Therefore, if he works to approve fansites, chances are that he would make up the whole team and would easily be found out by Jagex.
  3. He uses American spelling "recognized" even though Jagex have always been a devout British spelling company. While this doesn't prove anything, it does back up the fact that the "proxy server" that he used in North America was actually him computer.
  4. He created this thread around prime-time in America (6pm).
  5. He claims we deal have information describing guture updates which we simply don't have, and this is frowmed apon. If they didn't like future content, then Jagex would have shut down the Future updates forum years ago. While we only deal with the Facts in official Jagex statments, threads there predict the rest of a quest series based on the examine info od a door and the fact that one of the characters has blue robes.

I think that this is very, very, very likely a hoax by some American kid. At least he knew what Yew Grove was. Unicorn horn dust.png Evil Yanks talk 03:51, January 17, 2010 (UTC)
