As many of you know, we've been documenting item actions in a systematic way in item infoboxes for a while now. This includes actions for the item in backpack, when on the ground, and when equipped. A decision was made to exclude some commonly used actions such as "Use" and "Examine", presumably to reduce clutter, but I find this to be a bad decision. Furthermore, there was discrepancies in the infobox documentation, the infobox rendered on the page, and how the bot pulling this data from the cache which actions should be excluded, so to make things somewhat consistent, I have removed all mentions about excluded actions from the documentation and infobox. The bot, however, still continues to exclude certain actions.

Not all items have a "Drop" option, and sometimes it's useful information to see whether the common "Use" option is the first one or not. We could also hide the common options and show a full listing as a tooltip as suggested here, or add toggles.

I propose that we don't exclude anything for completeness' sake, and deal with the possible clutter later if needed.

Discussion

Partial support - I agree with all of these, but in the linked talk page there is also a reference to "Walk here". It should be made clear that "Walk here" is never an action on an object (I just checked the cache, there are no objects with that option), so it should always be excluded from any infobox action list. Good point about "Walk here". It can actually be confirmed to not be an option on the item by rotating the camera around, but I can see someone easily getting confused about it when clicking an item on the ground with an conventional camera angle. I think it should be enough to explain this in the documentation for starters (as it currently is), and if it still becomes a problem, then add some hints to the infobox too. Oppose - Actions should not be visible to the reader at all, for reasons I outlined here, and adding a redundant mention of "Use" to every single item page on the wiki is just unnecessary busywork. "Not all items have a "Drop" option (...)" - well of course, that's why Infobox Item has a whole row dedicated just to destroy/drop behaviour. And the "Use" option is always in the same relative place for every single item. All of this "Actions" nonsense does is just extend vertical length of infoboxes for no reason. 5-x Talk 15:57, 29 August 2021 (UTC)

I'd just like to point out that "Use" option isn't fixed to be the first option. Very many items have some other option before it, and some edible items have their "eat" option as the first one while for some "Use" is first. While fairly trivial information for some, it is worth documenting. I personally have already received great benefits from having the actions listed; it's actually one of the most useful pieces of information out there as it documents systematically how objects in the game can be interacted with. Very often we've omitted some interactions in text and these listings reveal those cases. Furthermore, we often have phrases like "Using this token unlocks..." without clarifying how to use it, and if the article reveals that there is an "Activate" action, it hints a bit on how to use the item. If we feel like all or some actions should be hidden by default, that's completely another discussion. Thingummywut (talk) 23:59, 29 August 2021 (UTC)
Adding to that, I'm pretty sure there are also some items where destroy/drop isn't in the usual location (granite and sandstone IIRC), and I think there might be a few where the "destroy" parameter lists a destroy message that shows up when dragging-and-dropping the item from the inventory but the item has a different option when right-clicked (IIRC augmented items have disassemble as a right-click option, but get a destroy message when dragged out of the inventory). I might be misremembering, it's been a while since I played and I don't have membership to check for myself, but if either of those is right that seems like reason enough to document the placement of destroy/drop actions. -Hourglass (2011 Halloween event) detail.png I Am Fendse Talk III The Spark.png- 01:51, 20 September 2021 (UTC)

Comment - If the plan is to add more actions, this is probably a good time to collapse the actions list for NPC/scenery from a bulleted list to comma-separated. Otherwise it's a lot of extra space. (Infobox Item already does this) ʞooɔ 18:38, 29 August 2021 (UTC)

Support per Psi and per Cook's comment - Let's capture the information granularly, but also avoid infobox vertical bloat where possible. Smithing.pngHephaestus (formerly Aescopalus) talkCrafting.png 15:44, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

Closed - There is consensus to include the full list of actions for each item. I have made Gaz Lloyd aware of this change so he can update Gaz Bot. The infobox for items already lists actions in a comma separated list which seems to address the concerns about lists taking up too much vertical space (this proposal specifically related to items, but this is worth noting if users wanted to make similar changes to scenery and NPC infoboxes). It also appears that the documentation for this has already been updated. Magic logs detail.pngIsobelTalk page 15:02, 8 November 2021 (UTC)
