Somehow we keep getting pm's from Gp Family drones/bots... Either they are going through the entire hiscores and hit the people in the cc at close to the same time, which sounds very unlikely. Or there is someone from time to time in the cc feeding them names, much more likely. Is there anyway to stop these pm's without changing private to friends. Full Slayer Helmet! Discussion

I don't really know what we can do. I've talked to some of the "higher-ups" in the chat, and they say they may be phasing out the use of the PMs, but we all know how trustworthy they are. Anyway, kicking anyone who doesn't talk and looks suspicious won't work. ʞooɔ 09:06, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

Uh huh. very true. Sometimes I just appear and listen to other ppl talking Smile 222 talk 10:44, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

What? - Sorry I'm completely confused as what you are talking about. What is the Gp Family drone/bots. And pm refers to private message right? 222 talk 09:16, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

When we are in the R S Wikia clan chat, we often get private messages asking us to join the "Gp Family" clan chat. Some people think that there are people in our clan chat that are feeding our names to the bots, that then message us. ʞooɔ 09:20, June 28, 2010 (UTC)
Ah, Ok. Thanks. 222 talk 09:24, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I don't think it's related to the cc, I've never gotten any of those pm's, and I'm always in the cc when I'm on RS.  —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Chessmaster (talk).

but are you a member or F2PHunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 09:48, June 28, 2010 (UTC)
I'm a F2P, and I don't see how that's even related. (FFS, 4 edit conflicts) bad_fetustalk 09:50, June 28, 2010 (UTC)
It is related because they only send messages to members as they are a members only clan because they merch members items, and i have proof because i didn't get one message and then about 30 minutes after becoming a member i got one.Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 10:01, June 28, 2010 (UTC)
Actually, they do indeed spam F2P, I've been spammed on a nonmember account (as stated lower) it would seem that they just don't spam the entire clan at once since users have reported getting spammed and I not getting a PM from them and as most cc goers are members it would seem the ones who don't get spammed are just lucky or have private on friends. And how exactly are they going to know if I'm a member or not? bad_fetustalk 10:52, June 28, 2010 (UTC)
I don't know, maybe what world your in but i just found i had nothing till i was a mem.Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 10:54, June 28, 2010 (UTC)
Well, if that's how they do it, they have a dumb bot, as I occasionally see p2p's in f2p worlds. I still don't think it's p2p only though. bad_fetustalk 10:55, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Yes they do seem to get us from the cc, but it won't do anything talking about it because, they ethier have a bot come in then go ou, or more likely they have a list and they once come in once and got peoples name.Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 09:48, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - As someone brought up in the cc (tlul if memory serves me correct) it's a bot which is scripted to come in add people than spam them, as for checking hiscores I believe this is not the case, as I was on a low level (IE no stats on hiscores) account which was spammed also, which leads me to believe while they do seem to mostly spam members they will spam anyone. Comment - There has been an increase in spam bots in the actual cc too, i would assume they are related or have we been targeted by regular spamming bots before? Or are the cc spam bots also grabbing names?- [Pharos] 11:37, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - There really isn't anything we can do. Just put your chat on friends or report them for macroing and add them to ignore. Andrew talk 14:21, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - They come into the clan chat, send every single person (excluding those who have private on friends/have the person on iggy) a private message and leave. It's set up to hit ~20 clan chats/minute, so I imagine a few thousand private messages, so I'm hoping Jagex will pick up on that soon. Just add them to ignore if you want your private on. And don't report them (it's more likely to hurt you, because your 60 second viewing window doesn't show anything but 1 line of text from them.) No proof they are macroing from just your window. Eventually people will bitch enough on forums and Jagex will put the banhammer all over GP family. It's just a question of when. HaloTalk 14:31, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

Macroing doesn't send in a text report. It alerts the detection system to keep a closer eye on that account. So yes, please do report them for macroing. Andrew talk 14:40, June 28, 2010 (UTC)
I assume you meant reporting (not macroing as first word)? I also assume you know more about this than me. I just know when I started playing it sent them a video of the past 60 seconds of your account, so that's what I thought it still was. HaloTalk 15:43, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I can tell you now, nobody is feeding names. 4-5 times I've seen "Goldmerch006" and other accounts that send the PMs to the people in our clan chat, so it's probable that they write the names and then PM us. Try not to assume the worst in people.   Swizz Talk   Events!   15:27, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

Common sense overrides AGF in this case. These are bots, everyone knows that. They go into clan chats and collect usernames. Even ranks in merch chats have confirmed that. Andrew talk 15:30, June 28, 2010 (UTC)
Swiz, look at what I said. I've seen it happen. They send the exact same message (to everyone in a clan chat within a matter of microseconds-no typos.) They enter, send messages, and leave in around 3 seconds. So I'm pretty darn sure it's just a really well made bot. HaloTalk 15:45, June 28, 2010 (UTC)
I knew they were bots, I meant assume faith in the people in the cc who he said could be feeding names.   Swizz Talk   Events!   16:30, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Unfortunate to hear that this is happening. I run a chat channel, also, and this "clan" has been harassing my members for the past two months, now. I, along with another chat channel owner, attempted to talk things out with the owners on their thread. Instead, they responded with "deal with it" and had their thread locked to prevent any more complaints. Star FindTalk 16:26, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

A little background on how this "clan" works: they usually have an automated bot that quickly enters the chat, adds a majority of the users within the chat channel, quickly leaves, and then systematically private messages each and every single member it added. Star FindTalk 16:28, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

It's Me - I am the one feeding them all the names, mwahaha. /sarcasm Anyway I doubt there is any real way to fix this, and it's not that big of a deal to get a private message when you can ignore it. xScoobsx Talk Contribs 17:22, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, I don't think that there really is anything that we can do about it, short of restricting access to the CC. In any case, it's not that big of a problem; the messages aren't sent that often, so they're pretty easy to just ignore. Suppa chuppa Talk 17:26, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - I've just spoken to some ranks in gp family. They confirmed that they do get the names from our clan chat. Supposedly, if we just get in contact with their leader, we can request that they stop targeting our cc. I'll try to do that and see if it works Wink Best Shield EVERAnnaLove scarves! 17:29, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

Unfortunately, that doesn't work. Their leaders will simply reconfirm that members within the chat channel will only be messaged once by each of their bots, even though they have 20+ bot accounts. Star FindTalk 19:43, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

I wonder if Jagex will ignore this just like they're ignoring merch clan spamming? Although I find it funny that even the merch clans who are responsible for 99% of bot spam I see are also being pestered by this. It has a pleasing level of poetic irony to it. But as for kicking people who look suspicious, this is too easily fixed by simply adding anyone who pms spam to you to ignore to risk kicking even one innocent person to prevent it. kitty.pngPsycho Robot talkSilver bar.png 17:30, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

It's not kicking people who look suspicious (and this is just a different form of merch clan spamming.) It's kicking people who have repeatedly used the clan chat to spam users. HaloTalk 17:38, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Here is what I know of how it works. There are multiple types of bots going, but these are the ones I'm familiar with:

  1. CCStealer - A bot which hops into a CC, records all of the names, and then immediately hops out. Known examples are Adv0005, Adv0006, Adv0012, Adv0013, you get the picture. They check the hiscores and then PM all the ones who look like they may be members. CCStealer is a script written for RSBot, and therefore is detectable by Jagex.
  2. A series of various bots which use hiscores, CCs, and other methods, to add names to a list of people. Multiple bots then use this list, which gets narrowed down as users have private chat off, to spam PMs. Some appear to randomise the order.

The second variety have become more common, which explains why users are getting PMed in different orders now. However, everything is done by bots, not by humans. I'm a regular user and I approve this message.  TLUL Talk - Contribs 21:26, June 28, 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, I figured they were bots after I got PMed 2 or 3 times and they all said the exact same thing Lol Andrew talk 02:14, June 30, 2010 (UTC)

Closed - I think it's safe to say we have established that nothing can be done besides reporting, ignoring, and kicking when necessary. Andrew talk 19:36, July 1, 2010 (UTC)
