Currently, most of the galleries look like the first picture below, my proposal is to add mode="packed" or mode="packed-hover" to all of them, so they look like the second and third galleries, respectively.

mode="packed-hover" works well when not every image has a caption. Issue on mobile if the caption is too big.

In this case all the pictures are wide enough to display as 1 per row, but in some cases it may vary.

Support - Because it looks better. Meeeeerds msg 00:22, 20 April 2019 (UTC)

Support - Whilst not the perfect solution it is definitely better than the current. Edit: I think I prefer the regular packed over the hover variant. Support/Use Common Sense - While I can't think of any page/example where the former would look better, let's not completely neglect it in case it does look better somewhere. Keep status quo/Use common sense - Packed does not really seem to work well for thin images with captions. I would rather not have a default format, but I wouldn't mind seeing more usage of packed galleries (maybe for captionless galleries). I'd say use whatever fits best - Cuxrie (talk) 01:46, 20 April 2019 (UTC)

Support/use common sense - I like packed and think it should probably be the default/typical mode used. Similarly to Haidro, I suspect there will be cases where the other two modes traditional mode might work better. I imagine the packed-hover might work well for a page with a lot of text-heavy images, e.g. promotional banners, if it weren't for the issues on mobile. - Rawny (talk) 02:02, 20 April 2019 (UTC)

Tweaked to reflect issues with packed-hover on mobile, as per other comments - Rawny (talk) 15:33, 20 April 2019 (UTC)

Comment - As someone who read this on mobile, don't use packed-hover. Mobile doesn't have hover and while they can appear while clicking on it, you basically end up opening the image in a viewer which doesn't appear to show the caption either. cqm talk 07:07, 20 April 2019 (UTC)

Use common sense, oppose packed-hover - As Cqm said, it doesn’t work well. iOS Safari doesn’t show the caption unless you’re tapping on the image in which cases you end up opening it in the media viewer jayden 08:41, 20 April 2019 (UTC)

Support packed, oppose packed-hover - Per cam --LiquidTalk 14:50, 20 April 2019 (UTC)

Support packed/Comment - I support the packed version (also as default, if that's up for vote here as well). I don't support the packed-hover option, as I don't want to hover over images every time I want to see the caption for that image. Also the issues with mobile makes it a no-go. Support packed, oppose packed-hover - Per Cqm and others. Farming-icon.png Salix of Prifddinas (Talk) Prifddinas lodestone icon.png 03:11, 21 April 2019 (UTC)

Support, comment - Packed-hover looks a lot more modern and has my conditional support as the default, but the usage on the mobile version is awkward and clunky. Replacing the variables of the stylesheet class mw-gallery-packed-hover with those of mw-gallery-packed fixes the problem by defaulting to packed, but can this be done on the mobile site without affecting the desktop's stylesheet? Failing that, packed would have my support as the default. Sahima Badir (talk) 13:33, 21 April 2019 (UTC)

You could do that, but I'd be inclined to avoid unnecessary js on mobile (which is how that would need to be implemented). I'd also be wary of automatically changing something behind the scenes as it might not be the desired effect everywhere. Better to be explicit with no weird side effects we have to maintain and fix ourselves. cqm talk 14:21, 22 April 2019 (UTC)

Support packed - I've been having trouble with making galleries look nice on Graphics settings which unlike most articles uses multiple galleries in the bodies of the article so packed style will work well fo rit. Use common sense re: fringe cases whether another format may be needed, per Haidro et al Superiosity the WikianQuick chat button.png : Yo 02:42, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

Support packed - I like the packed version. I don't use the mobile site, but I still prefer packed over hover even on desktop and as it seems there would be some issues with hover on mobile, I would vote for just avoiding hover and using packed.  RS AdvLogMyles Prower  Talk 15:08, 25 April 2019 (UTC)

Closed - The default gallery mode should be packed. However, a mode does not have to be included if there are any issues with packed mode. Packed-hover should be avoided because of mobile issues. Since there doesn't seem to be any policy regarding the usage of galleries, I've added a small paragraph here.
