Update: Wikia has temporarily removed all videos from the wiki.

As of today, Wikia has decided to start implementing featured videos at the top of various articles across the wiki, starting with those that are most popular. These are visible on Money making guide and Treasure Trails/Guide/Coordinates. They can contain pre-roll ads if you're not using any kind of adblock software, and auto-play (with no audio).

We'd like to stress that these videos are not created by us, nor did we ask for them to be implemented. We have contacted Wikia about them, but it's completely beyond our control. This thread serves as a place to give feedback on and discuss them.

We have created a messagebox template that we will put on articles that we spot using these videos to clarify that they aren't our videos, with a link to this thread.

Hiding the videos

Due to Wikia's [ Terms of Use], it would be a violation for us to remove the videos using JavaScript and CSS site-wide for all of our users. Instead, if you have a Wikia account, follow the steps below if you would like to hide these videos yourself:

  • Go to this page, and tick Enable personal JavaScript
  • Go to this page (to hide across Wikia) or Special:MyPage/common.js (to hide on this wiki)
  • Edit the page, paste this code in on a new line and save:
  • (Optional) Go to this page (to hide across Wikia) or Special:MyPage/common.css (to hide on this wiki)
  • (Optional) Edit the page, paste this code in on a new line and save:
.featured-video-wrapper {
    display: none;

Alternatively, you could try blocking the element using Adblock or similar extensions.

Hiding with uBlock Origin

Add the following as a rule to the uBlock Origin browser plugin:

Ugh - They're terrible. The scripts are so bad it isn't even funny. The narrator clearly has no game knowledge. These videos will ruin articles because of their outdated information (see the MMG video and you'll understand why). We don't want them, we didn't ask for them, but we got them.

Wikia won't be working with communities on scripts, so we don't even have any input at all. jayden 22:23, September 5, 2017 (UTC)

Oppose - <--- Not like that does anything, but I'd like to emphasise my contempt for these featured videos. The two I've seen so far were so poorly made, it was as if the author had little to no knowledge of the game. I don't want them here, or on the OSRS Wiki. EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER

As for the OSRS Wiki, we too will use the messagebox template with a link to this same thread, should we spot any featured videos on our articles. -- Recent uploads SpineTalkGuest book 22:34, September 5, 2017 (UTC)

It's so bad - The videos are the first thing people will see when they get on the page. If they don't have an adblocker installed, that means a 30-second autoplaying ad above the article content. Secondly, the videos are bad. Like, really bad. The person narrating them have no idea what they're talking about and are just quoting somewhat related wiki articles, and poorly at that (how do you not know what minutes are regarding latitude and longtitude?!). It's just a bad idea all around, but because Wikia seems to not care about the input of its communities and only about money, it's very likely nothing will change and we won't have a say in the matter. move to gamepedia when User talk:ThePsionic.png: RS3 Inventory image of User talk:ThePsionic ThePsionic Special:Contributions/ThePsionic.png: RS3 Inventory image of Special:Contributions/ThePsionic 22:41, September 5, 2017 (UTC)

Also @Wikia stop stealing your background videos from youtube - either create your own or have someone who plays the game make them for you. This is just distasteful. (And yes, I asked Moto, who made the video on the MMG page. He didn't give permission.) Oppose - I started to watch the MMG one to see what they were like, and... ugh. Even if you don't have any knowledge of RS, it doesn't make sense. "There are two main ways to grow your money reserves in RuneScape. The first being: hourly profit." Wut. That's not a way to make money, that's how effective your method is!

The correct answer to that sentence was: Slayer. 0/10 update. -- F-Lambda (talk) 22:58, September 5, 2017 (UTC)

I hate to defend Wikia but you're wrong on this, the narrator was talking about hourly profit vs irregular profit (things you can't do continuously e.g. dailies). Not that that's an excuse for the rest of the video. Bluefire2  Choose OptionMy page Talk to me! Edit my sig pl0x Guestbook pl0xOil4 I made this 02:57, September 8, 2017 (UTC)

Level 7 Zamic wizard - How can they be this bad. Just, wow.

I think the level of care that was put into the videos is most clearly shown at about 20 seconds into the coordinate one. She says it takes 2 minutes to travel one game square, which may easily fly under your radar unless you realise that she's talking about 2 minutes of time, and the article is talking about 2 minutes of distance (longitude/latitude). Just like coordinates works IRL. Two sentences earlier she mentions that it works like IRL. I just... ugh.

No one gave a shit when making these videos and it makes us look bad. Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 23:00, September 5, 2017 (UTC)

I DONT LIKE THIS - I couldn't even watch the first 10 seconds of the MMG one when she said "all currency is calculated using current Grand Market prices. Jesus effing Christ. These are terrible because even if the videos weren't out of date, they will be eventually. And as others have already pointed out she clearly didn't know what she was talking about. The whole point of Wikis are so that people passionate about something can share their up to date knowledge on it! I don't know much about the wiki higher ups and exactly what influence we have with each other (but I'm guessing its very one sided) but I find it incredibly stupid that they would force something on us that defies what makes wikis great in the first place. </rant> Superiosity the WikianQuick chat button.png : Sup 23:17, September 5, 2017 (UTC)

Probably just going to consider pulling the plug on visiting all wikia sites then if this is the level of incompetence they intend to put in. - I'm sure this sounds like the standard "quitting runescape" you might hear someone say. But given how much trouble wikia fansite specific editors/contributors already have to deal with unnecessary edits and even malicious edits ... a person for Wikia stated that despite their already hectic schedule, they are going to create these videos without any input from the local wikia editors/moderators on their own time? Yet the local wikia editors usually have 10000000 times more knowledge of the local wiki content than the people making the videos? ................ so are they forcing us to create our own videos for every page? do we need to create false traffic on pages that we don't really care about (ie Thingy) so they waste their time on those pages? Sure you guys have seen things ... but the quality of these videos is so bad it actually takes away from the quality of the articles ......... Frankly, if they don't pull the videos out after a while, I'll ping Salix in game to revoke my in game title, and just change my status on here to 'retired'. Wikia is clueless - Congrats, wikia. You continue to make the user experience even worse, but at least you are driving analytics up (which is all that matters, right??). The videos are awful and filled with misinformation. But more importantly, they're completely useless for readers. Readers don't need a video that gives them vague information about what map clues are, and that it can be "a great excuse to work co-op with other players". They are looking for a quick answer to the clue they're on -- having an auto-playing video that auto-follows as you scroll is NOT going to make them come back. I had a good laugh when they showed private server footage in the OSRS map clue video, though. Clueless. Mining cape (t).png Rune14 (talk) Mining cape (t).png 05:51, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

why are we still dealing with this crap - simply put, this wiki and its sister wiki (old school) should move to a different host, like gamepedia. Let's change hosts (again mk IV) - It's truly admirable how profoundly horrible each of Wikia's new updates are. I don't think they've done any good at all since deleting Monaco, and that was years ago. I honestly don't know whom they think this is going to help, apart from themselves. And since that's glaringly obvious, it's quite plain that they only care about themselves. We should do everything we can to get rid of this crap. Put a huge notice on the main page on how to do it for readers, and ditto for removing ads, if those are still a problem (yay adblock). Changing host - I'm relatively new to editing the wiki so I didn't get the whole 'changing host' thing before. But my god, I get it now. Those videos are so horrifically bad. Literally anyone with 5 minutes of gameplay under their belt would have done a better job. Which is fine, they can create all the bad videos they want. But refusing the input of us? That's just a no-go. They seriously refuse to delete this abomination that they spent a whole 2 minutes on creating. I'm not one to get mad easily, but man I'm mad. The level of incompetence and apathy goes through the roof. We should seriously consider changing host. (Which I know has been done before.)--Galian prist (talk) 08:41, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

Comment - The featured video feature wastes every editor, reader and Wikia Inc.'s time. Easily outdated if some effort was put into them and the wholesale stealing of videos from Youtube is horrifying. I would have hoped that they would understand they cannot have their interns or whoever is involved to present these farces. The videos are intolerable and represent the content on this wiki in the worst possible way. Moving hosts will do nothing; just send the proper message to Wikia Inc. that this cannot continue. Ryan PM 09:04, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

Wikia care more about monetization over reputability - may sound harsh but it's true. With the private server videos appearing (mainly on OSW) and I bet there's some dicing or gambling sites somewhere too, it's clear that Wikia do not really care about our inevitably tarnished reputation as the best RS resource. I remember earlier threads about forking to another host years back, I wouldn't be surprised if another popped up again.

Though it's not all that surprising, in a way. We are one of the most consistent and active Wikia wikis, however I do think it's out of order to carelessly embed these abomination videos about "Zamic wizard" and other repugnance. They should have thought it through rather than giving us no choice but to accept them and no deliberation on the matter. — KnazO 11:22, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

Jagex... - ...have contacted Wikia and they said they are going to "address any inaccuracies". It's good that they're helping us out. The bad thing is though, we don't want these videos altogether. We've consistently voted as a community on multiple occasions against them (most recently Forum:Videos on specifics pages). I'm sure everyone would rather these be removed rather than made "more consistent". I feel like, at this point, maybe it would be an idea to contact Jagex and see if they would theoretically be willing to fork the site onto their domain - if people are going to start talking about changing hosts again (which I can see has already started). I don't like Wikia either, and I want to move, but because of things like search rankings (as addressed in the countless amounts of 'move hosts' threads), the only viable way I see of doing this is to move to RuneScape's official domain. jayden 12:38, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

Agree — The main problem with the original wiki that Jagex made tried to make was that it was trying to compete with another, long-established wiki with extremely dedicated editors (us). But, if we were to completely uproot and relocate to their domain, we might be able to actually make it work. (A permanent link on the RuneScape homepage would certainly help to combat Wikia's SEO.) -- F-Lambda (talk) 23:06, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

Featured Videos - Hi Runescape community. I've read through your feedback both here and on the Reddit thread. We've taken the video down from the Coordinates page based on that feedbck (you may need to purge the page to confirm its removal) and I am in contact with a rep from Jagex. I've also sent your feedback about the content of the video to the video creator for revision. As you know Featured Video is a new feature for us and, in this case, we've hit some bumps in the road; we will continue to refine and improve our offerings. Jen Burton<staff /> (help forum | blog)

I'd love for this to be a step in the right direction, but all of the videos you have implemented on this wiki so far (including the Money making guide one which you haven't removed) are inaccurate. As much as it is understandable that you represent a company and the company's interests, it is not within our interests - as a community, as editors, and as players - to use these videos on our wiki. They will quickly become outdated and we'll have the same problem where there will be heavy complaints about the content. In a game like this, where anything can change at any time (in comparison to say, Grand Theft Auto), these videos are not suitable for us at all. Please save the increasing amount of complaints and the inevitable misinformation in the future by not implementing these videos at all on the wiki jayden 16:53, September 6, 2017 (UTC)
Hey Jayden (and the whole community), we have now removed all the videos posted both on Runescape and OSRS and are evaluating processes going forward. As mentioned below re my conversation with Jagex, we're looking at including one person from the community in the script review process. The reason for just one person is that in our previous attempts (not here) to involve the larger community in script creation we found that having too much input resulted in lower quality scripts so if we continue to create video for Runescape, we want to test to see how having a single point of contact will work. I'll work with the admins to identify who the best person to start with would be. We'll also be having internal discussions today and tomorrow regarding whether the nature of Runescape and its ever changing elements means it's not a good candidate for featured video at all. Please know that I want to work with the community on this issue and, if possible, come to an agreement that works for both FANDOM and the Runescape community here. Jen Burton<staff /> (help forum | blog)
Thanks for taking this feedback seriously jayden 18:59, September 6, 2017 (UTC)
I'm sure it was mentioned already, but it really should be one person for RSW and one for OSRSW. The games are already very different, and are increasingly diverging. I wouldn't feel confident about finer details of OSRS content, and know nothing of OSRS-exclusive content. A lot of us only play one of the games. Thanks, Gaz - good point. Jen Burton<staff /> (help forum | blog)
Though there's a much better route you could take - simply use your userpage on this Wiki to post new scripts and ask the community to review them. Additionally, make your own video content or ask for permission (and review those too for quality/accuracy) as from my understanding, the background video was just taken from stuff on youtube. Finally, making videos for an MMO to put - unremovably - on a wiki page is just downright dumb because it's a game that is updated weekly. Unless you guys are willing to check every update and have to update your videos when changes are made, it's just a waste of time for you to have these videos produced. There's even a clue scroll rework coming up in the next few months, making the Coordinates video further laughable, since stuff is GOING to be changed. So unless you guys are committing to making quality videos that are redone every time an update affects it, please don't waste your time, or the time of the editors here. With text, we can just change text. With videos, you need to entirely rerecord. Is that really worth the time and the headache? I don't think so. Amascut symbol.png Amascut Ia Morte 01:19, September 7, 2017 (UTC)
This is the key thing that needs to be thought about and I really hope that Wikia’s internal meeting takes it seriously into account that these videos will never be at a satisfactory standard. The game is evolving, features of the game are being completely reworked in places (like some skills) as I’m sure you could learn from talking with Jagex. I know this is a move to make money from revenue streams coming from video but I’d rather keep the ads we have over having intrusive and inaccurate videos on our articles. From a business perspective, it makes sense to want to generate revenue from your service, but if you are making that service bad for those using it then you’re losing more than you gain. People that play the game have expressed their hatred for the advertising as it is, and these videos. Jen, you may have noticed we’ve been conducting a survey for the last month to get feedback on our wiki. I invite you to take a look at the results when they are posted next week. I think you’ll find a large number of complaints about things that are down to Wikia (ads, changes to search, slow loading) rather than us. jayden 01:50, September 7, 2017 (UTC)
Well said, Jayden. I haven't been able to trust Wikia on anything lately, but this is a new level of low for them. You guys at Wikia are lucky Mol quit, because he'd probably go even more ballistic than when ads were slipped into infoboxes, and I daresay he'd be angry enough to want to switch over to another host... 7kyt1iT.gif --WINE OF GOOD HEALTH (Actually Stinko) 16:59, September 6, 2017 (UTC)
Right there with you Jayden. I don't understand why "Fandom" would think it is a good idea to have someone who clearly has no idea what this game is about make video content on it. If Wikia wants video content, ASK THE PLAYERS WHO PLAY THE GAME. Not this stupid junk that clutters many user's pages and makes the staff look like fools. Amascut symbol.png Amascut Ia Morte 17:09, September 6, 2017 (UTC)
Jen, I appreciate Wikia's attempt. One of my biggest issues with Wikia creating videos, not just for Runescape, but for almost any other is that many of the video games, comic books, and TV series are on going. So there is a chance that there can be a major change at an point. It's possible for Jagex (the software development company of Runescape) to remove a piece of content, and suddenly render the video at the top of the page obsolete. And since the community didn't create the video AND we have 0 control over it, we wouldn't be able to update it to reflect the latest changes. For example: Jagex could change the Treasure Trails to no longer have coordinate clues or replace the Level 77 Zamorakian Wizards with Level 200 Bandosian Warriors. This would have a huge impact on the accuracy of the video. --Deltaslug (talk) 23:16, September 6, 2017 (UTC)
A good one to show this effect would be the ones over at Warframe. As currently, DE have stated that Chroma, One of the frames, will be getting a rework soon. No clue if it'll be like Hydroid where it's just a few changes, mainly quality of life ones or like Oberon where it got major changes. An MMO evolves over time, Having a video would easily mean that it becomes outdated rapidly. Twig Talk 772kZGs.png 06:22, September 7, 2017 (UTC)

I have a sneaking suspicion that the person reading these scripts is a robot. 7kyt1iT.gif --WINE OF GOOD HEALTH (Actually Stinko) 17:19, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

Update from Jagex - Jagex has been in contact with Wikia/Fandom about these videos and to summarise:

  • Wikia/Fandom have taken down one video - the one that was on Treasure Trails/Guide/Coordinates - but it will probably come back in a revised form
  • Wikia/Fandom will only be willing work with one member of the community for creating/reviewing video scripts
  • According to the Sales Director at Wikia/Fandom, the videos are here to stay

Our move. I don't think this changes much in terms of why a lot of us are complaining, but I also don't think Wikia are going to change their stance about this at all from the sounds of things. jayden 17:58, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

Comment - I feel like completely rewriting the script isn't going to happen, so whoever is the 'reviewer' basically just has to damage control the scripts. The coordinates one was probably the most redeemable: if all the issues were corrected, it would be a passable (if boring, bland, and unnecessary) summary of what a coordinate clue is. (I don't know if you could save any of the other four videos, though.) That may be the high bar of what we're looking at here, unless Wikia assign more time to their video-makers. It would be nice if the videos were actually useful, insightful, or just worth having there.

Some quick ideas for better subjects, still about the same target pages: discuss how exactly to solve a coordinate clue (how to use a sextant), relate that to IRL (e.g. show coordinates for some famous landmarks on google maps); explain basic economic principles and how they relates to RS, like efficiency and time value, opportunity cost, bid-ask spread, etc.; explain how to use the Grand Exchange Market; explain the plot of Cook's Assistant and RfD, or give us trivia on them; talk about how and why you can use quest XP rewards to jump ahead (thinking Fairy Tale part 1 jumps you to 20s Farming), or why you'd want to avoid them (pures); talk about notable maps or how to read them, iunno about that one - maybe broaden to clues in general.

And to staff, since I know you're probably reading this: I know there's a lot of wikis on Wikia, and to get a video on the most traffic'd few pages on the most traffic'd wikis, you need to be working flat out for a long time. But consider, that video that was one of the X that had to be done today that got a "eh good enough" is now sat at the of the most viewed article[s] of the wiki - apparently some of the most viewed articles on Wikia. This trash is taking up the first impression of the page. And its going to be there for, what, months? Years? Just, please, have some extra thought put in to what will be permanent, unavoidable content on wikis.

Not just this wiki either. I know we're somewhat privileged, being an old, large, well-viewed, highly active wiki, and having contact with Jagex; we have more strings to pull. I feel for the wikis that can't get the IP owner involved, or don't have a loud enough voice or big enough community to get stuff to happen. Just, have an extra thought when thinking if the video is OK. "Will this video be akin to pooping on first impression of the top article of this wiki?" Because the 5 that were made for RSW and OSRSW were. Quest.png Gaz Lloyd 7:^]Events!99s 19:23, September 6, 2017 (UTC)

Create our own videos - The more that I think about this issue and the videos, the more pissed off that I get. Do you think it would be worth it to create our own videos (of the exact same nature/similar content) and slap them on these high-traffic pages? If we do this before they come back with another set of garbage videos, we might be able to damage control and say "hey look, we can create videos exactly like yours, just better, and we will do it for free." These are just thoughts... but I'm down to lead content creation if it comes to it, let me know on Discord. I'm out. Zahti (talk) 04:21, September 7, 2017 (UTC)

RS Wiki had (sort of still has) a youtube channel.
  1. It fell into disrepair because no one was interested in making videos.
  2. Even reviewing Wikia's scripts seems like something Wikia/FANDOM/whatever should be PAYING someone to do. To have someone from the wiki volunteer to help create the trash is tacitly approving of the trash, at which point we cannot disown it.
I'd rather just put a box around it to label it a contemptuous spoof of gamer culture so that no one takes Wikia's videos seriously. It's too bad that that would violate TOS. --Saftzie (talk) 04:15, September 8, 2017 (UTC)

Hello from Nukapedia: The fallout wiki. We are equally unhappy with the way that these videos have been added. Wish I could offer something more than Moral Support, but if we make any progress I'd be happy to let you know. Like you we are considering all options. We're dealing with our version of the situation here. Ive been in contact with Fandom and you can read their response on the matter on that page too. Good luck, I fear we're all going to need it. Luckily Fandom have listened to our requests and feedback so far and acted on them. Whether you'll get them to do the same for your wiki is another story unfortunately jayden 09:53, September 8, 2017 (UTC)
Been re-reading this out of curiosity, its strange how Wikia's bad ideas can bring even the most unlikely communities together. Sending well wishes towards your wiki. --dDbvitC.pngScuzzy Betahib8CAd.png 21:59, September 12, 2017 (UTC)

Super Distracting Not even taking about the quality, it is super annoying how it follows me around on the page.

uBlock origin browser plugin does a wonderful job at blocking these videos. Normally I try not to block any content and support the site, but these videos got to go. Another fail decision by Wikia. If this is an attempt to monetize wikis, it's a very poor attempt. They are just annoying their users and people who know any better will just block the videos on the client side. One month in... Not to reopen old wounds, but has there been any development on this issue? I wasn't especially active on the wiki at the time this all went on, but we are now like a month in, and while I am hoping that no news is good news at this point, no news is also scary. So, was just wondering what our situation is currently, if it is a "wait and see" type of situation, or if we should be gearing up for if/when these videos again rear their ugly heads?  RS AdvLogMyles Prower  Talk 16:49, October 4, 2017 (UTC)

We've talked about this with Wikia and it is likely that we'll make some kind of follow-up thread next week. The tl;dr is that they still want to implement video jayden 16:54, October 4, 2017 (UTC)
But...why? Just why? Are they really thinking it's a good idea for a wiki about an MMO that changes weekly, sometimes even more frequently than that? I honestly do not understand why they think this is a good idea... 7kyt1iT.gif --WINE OF GOOD HEALTH (Actually Stinko) 03:07, October 11, 2017 (UTC)
They couldn't care less. As long as the videos generate more money than is potentially lost by people no longer visiting the wiki because of them, they're doing it. User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 13:45, October 12, 2017 (UTC)

Closed - Wikia haven’t had any contact with us for weeks. The last time we spoke to them we told them we refuse to write their stupid video scripts. I’ll reopen this if they say anything meaningful jayden 18:05, October 12, 2017 (UTC)
