Forum:Exploration of Interest: RS Wiki Alexa Skill
I am creating this discussion to explore the interest (or lack of) that the RS Wiki community may have in an RS Wiki Alexa Skill. This was something that popped into my head today while looking into some of the features of the Amazon Echo device my family recently purchased. Basically, I am curious to see if anyone else would be (a) interested in using such a skill if one were to be created and/or (b) interested in helping to create such a skill (as I don't have a great deal of programming experience personally, but would be interested in getting the project of the ground at least).
My initial idea came about when researching something called "flash briefing" which is basically asking your Alexa-enabled device to read your pre-selected news headlines, TV schedules, etc. I thought it would be pretty cool to have Alexa read me the latest RuneScape update, and thus the idea was born. So, a few follow-up thoughts, and then this thread is open for any discussions/thoughts/suggestions anyone may have about this idea.
-Is this something that really would be more suited to Jagex themselves publishing? Do they have any interest in this? If they do not, would we have/be able to get their permission to distribute? (Mostly this pertains to the flash breifing portion of the idea).
-What other possibilities are there if we expand the idea into a full RS Wiki skill? Grand Exchange lookups might be a nice feature: "Alexa, ask RS Wiki how much maple logs are worth" for example. I believe there is a skill for this already, but it has one review that says it is out of date and doesn't function well.
-Other possible features might include high scores "Alexa, ask RS Wiki who is ranked first in Woodcutting" or "...what rank is Myles Prower in Invention?".
-Perhaps even something more simple to start out at least, like the ability to ask "Alexa, ask RS Wiki about Grace of the Elves" (whereby she could information from the given Wiki article, similar to how she sometimes does for Wikipedia articles).
Okay, so that is kind of my thoughts at this time. I realize this is a bit of an open-ended concept with no real "solution" per se, so if we let it run for a week or two to gauge interest, we can probably figure out how to proceed (or nto) from that point.
tl;dr Would you use and/or want to help develop an RS Wiki skill for Alexa-enabled devices, or do you have a good reason why this probably is an awful idea?

Comment - As op, I propose for discussion purposes (since there isn't a definitive and concrete proposal to support or oppose) let's use "Support" to mean "I am interested in this possibility and think we should discuss it further" and "Oppose" to mean "I see a problem with this, and/or feel that this idea is not worth pursuing". Feel free to "Comment" as well.05:45, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
Comment - From a technical perspective, I have no clue what this would involve or how much work it would be. I suspect the amount of work would be non-trivial and would end up on the to-do list of the sysadmins (unless someone else wants to spearhead it). Realistically, I doubt we have the resources to throw at this and I think there's limited benefit for it as well. cqm talk 09:00, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
Oppose - It's a cool idea, but not really practical. I feel like it would not be worth the time to implement this kind of feature. Perhaps at some point in the future if this kind of technology was more widespread then this might be more feasible but at the moment I feel this is too niche of a thing to devote that much effort to.22:56, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
Comment - I actually have worked on such a program on and off for a while, but do not have server space that can be accessed by Alexa. As it stands, it should be able to tell the user how much time remains until reset and the next Warband, but again, I can't test it because no server. I want it to be able to look up GE prices for at least commonly traded items, depending on what the limits are of Amazon's speech recognition are (you feed it a list of expected inputs for given queries, so it might be possible to spell RuneScape-specific items in such a way that it can infer their pronunciation) and the ability of our user base to pronounce things discernibly. Support/Comment - We'd need someone skilled in developing such an app here. Yet, I think it would be a cool little trick. But also would need significant Jagex help. I feel they would have the resources available to move into that territory.16:37, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
Comment- wouldn't this be an issue with a lot of terms that are difficult for some of us to pronounce? While "maple logs" would be easy for most english speakers ... there are an awful lot of words and phrases pulled from Latin, Welsh, nordic regions, etc. Heck, how many people get Ardougne right? Comment - I think this is great idea but ahead of its time. I checked for an app to the new wiki in Google Play app store a week ago. Only the old wikia app is there. This is a more immediate need, imho. Masolim (talk) 15:13, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
Request for closure - As OP, I would request that this topic may now be closed, as it has been over a week since last comment. It seems at this time that, while there interest is there, the time and resources to dedicate to a project of this scope are not, so perhaps it woud be something to revist at a later date.02:48, 21 January 2019 (UTC)
