Forum:Equipped item image policy change proposal
The Evolution of Combat beta has introduced the ability to sheathe/stow your character's weapons and shields when out of combat, instead of constantly wielding them. Players also have a "combat" and a "relaxed" stance when they have their weapons out, however combat stance is probably impractical to get equipped item images of, due to needing a third person to initiate combat with and the timeframe that the image taker would have to get the combat stance image in.
All the mainspace equipped item images are of unsheathed weapons/shields, simply because that is the only way that that have been represented on the avatars up until now. But now that is no longer the case, I am proposing a change to the image policy regarding equipped weapons and shields, to be put into effect once the EoC is introduced to the live game.
Proposal 1: - All weapons/shields should have a sheathed image and an unsheathed, relaxed stance image in the bonuses infobox, where possible. If there are time constraints on the image taker, the unsheathed stance is priority.
Proposal 2: Set it in stone that only unsheathed, relaxed stance equipped item images are to be used in the bonuses infobox.
If the policy is set one way or another, it will give people something to point to to head off arguments about sheathed weapon/shield images at a later date.17:38, July 14, 2012 (UTC)
Support 1 - it will allow players to see what weapons and shields look like when they're sheathed as well.17:38, July 14, 2012 (UTC)
Support Either - We must have conformity. MolMan 18:00, July 14, 2012 (UTC)
- But I more lean towards Proposal 2 MolMan 05:35, July 15, 2012 (UTC)
Comment - Combat stance does not actually require players to be in combat. They could simply use some abilities that could be used without a target, such as Freedom. 18:07, July 14, 2012 (UTC)
Question - How will this go with having an image for each gender? I am aware, though, that for most weapons/etc there's no difference, so I guess it's not that significant. Oh, and support 1. -- Cycloneblaze (user - talk - contribs) 18:11, July 14, 2012 (UTC)
Support 1 - As Ansela said above, I think showing sheathed images should be done wherever possible. Looking at Atheist's comment, though, I wonder if we might want to do that as well... Michagogo (talk) 23:08, July 14, 2012 (UTC)
Support 2. Unsheathed, relaxed stance weapons & armour are the easiest to get a picture of, as well as the most accurate stance (since some large weapons appear smaller on players' backs due to space limitations). --Andorin (Talk) (Contribs) 05:26, July 15, 2012 (UTC)
Support 2 - Unsheathed just looks so much better and item sets can be put in one image, instead of needing another shot for the shield hanging from the back. It is also a more natural position for weapons; in your hand, not cutting through your back. It also resembles the current stances more.06:42, July 15, 2012 (UTC)
Comment - Combat stance is the most natural position for most weapons. Torag's hammer, for example, doesn't look too natural. Also, I temporarily removed The Mol Man's signature to make the thread more readable. 11:27, July 15, 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, but that would require a need to tank hits or take it after combat within three seconds. The rpoblem with tanking is HP bars and hitsplats interfering with le subject.

- Oh right, completely forgot about abilities. 08:52, July 17, 2012 (UTC)

Support 1 - With the introduction of the switch infobox, we can have multiple images in a single image slot. I believe this is only currently set up for monster infoboxes, but I'm sure it can be tweaked for this too. Of course, we should be thankful for what our image-takers can provide, so whilst this is desired, we should prioritise the unsheathed image as mentioned in proposal 2. cqm 12:40,16/7/2012 (UTC) (UTC)
Support 2/Neutral 1 - I don't see the real urgency for 2 images, but some users like seeing "how cool they'll look with this" pictures so I wouldn't want to stop that Hair 18:12, July 16, 2012 (UTC)
Support 2 - Sheathed stance isn't always better. An example is seeing the Statius's warhammer sheathed versus unsheathed to the combat stance. When sheathed, it looks no bigger than a normal hammer. However, when it is unsheathed or in combat, it looks about the same size as it does in the live game. Sometimes it looks odd to only have the image taker take a image of the avatar with sheathed weapons on the back.
The only time I can recall we want that is when it is a cape image as that's where the details are. Going back to the SWH, it would be a picture from and of the hip and nothing else. For me, it just looks too odd to keep as a main image. I personally prefer unsheathed to sheathed images and likewise to combat stances. Ryan PM 18:22, July 16, 2012 (UTC)
- Ryan makes a great point. With this, I believe we should add somewhere on the template where exactly the weapon goes when it is sheathed. MolMan 20:20, July 16, 2012 (UTC)
Support 2 - Not only would this look more like how we currently do our images, #1 would just go nuts when it combines with Forum:Male, Female Or Both. Since peopel seem to go nuts on having extra images for both genders (looking at one example, tokhaar-kal, which I don't think needs an image for both genders), if we did #1, which requests that we have 2 images: one sheathed and one unsheathed, we'd need both gender images for both of those as well. I'm not sure the infobox can handle 4 images, or if anyone would even be willing to take that many images (or add transparency/tranclucency, no less!) Coelacanth0794 Talk 23:23, July 16, 2012 (UTC)
Support 2 - Only one picture should be needed for a person to be able to identify a weapon, so why put the extra effort on ourselves to add such unneeded information? Since weapons are more easily and clearly seen when unsheathed it would make logical sense to take the picture of an item while unsheathed. >>>✯Talk✯✯[[Special:Chat|<span style="color:black">Chat</span>]]✯<<< 23:29, July 16, 2012 (UTC)
Comment - You can sheath weapons by pressing * above you numpad. You don't need to be in a fight and you don't even have to use an ability. I say: show pictures of the weapons while you hold them in your hand. TheMadWolf (talk)
- We know this already. There are two different stances with unsheathed weapons though; the relaxed one, where you're just holding them, and the combat one that you go to automatically when you enter combat. 18:27, July 17, 2012 (UTC)
- Why exactly? It's clearer when holding it in your hand and even better when in combat stance (which can be achieved by activating defence/hitpoints 'abilities'). 15:10, July 23, 2012 (UTC)
