Forum:Discussion on Message Wall
There's no discussion on it here yet, so I figured I'd start a Yew Grove discussion on this, as unless Wikia decides to change its mind (has it ever?), there next big change is really going to be another outrage. Behold, Wikia's latest monster: [[w:Message Wall|Message Walls]].
Instead of leaving our User talk pages as they are, they insist on making them into the latest facebook clone, and the worst part: it's not optional. While still in development, with the chance that the optional clause may change, it's unlikely Wikia will do so just because we dislike it. After all, we've loathed almost every other change they've made recently, yet they've forced it on the wiki.
With this, many aspects of talk pages which we use will no longer be possible. For example, we cannot see the source of others posts: so if you want to know how someone did something, ask, as you can't see it yourself. You can't actually edit the page, so if you have a nice header ("who ever posts first will get a bajillion digits of pi...") or surround your talk page with a pwetty div (such as Urbancowgurl777), sorry, Wikia's out to get you. What a crock.05:07, October 12, 2011 (UTC)
- Also, let's wait to rage completely until the feature is out and what it includes is set in stone. 05:18, October 12, 2011 (UTC)
Comment - Users will be redirected to User:Thebrains222/Talk, I suggest others do the same. I've been commenting strongly against the changes on the relevant blog pages. 222 talk 05:23, October 12, 2011 (UTC)
Comment - Let's be clear on this. Wall won't be released Wikia-wide for at least the next two months. They have already chosen some of their testing wiki's to iron out bugs. We could be one of the wikis to give serious feedback and not be like Glee Wiki where everything is taken with glee and cheerfully. That being said, I do not care for this extension nor do I want any type of "Article comments/blogs" on this wiki. That is the last straw for me when they extend it further than the Glee/Twilight Wiki on all administrative aspects.
The sad thing is that as of recent, Wikia has taken it upon themselves that all non-staff/vstf extensions are to be Wikia-wide releases, good or humorously bad. I've made my complaints on it along with other users from here and abroad to Wikia on this extension. Don't expect anything different from now on of Wikia Inc. and their future releases.
Nothing we say here (unless we have them enable it here) will be of any value. You can see that with how long it took for the history dropdown in articles to go away and the image attribution. Things won't change unless it's a bug in the system. The personal messages, designs for the User wall will come at a later date (after leaving beta stages). In essence, they are alienating the veteran users of MediaWiki for the betterment [source needed] of new editors. Ryan PM 06:09, October 12, 2011 (UTC)
Comment - The link doesn't work. Also, kill Wikia.16:14, October 12, 2011 (UTC)
Comment - We can hope Wikia doesn't make this change, and if they do, it is optional for wikis in Special:WikiFeatures, but if not, we could make a page "User talk:username/Talk", with
__NEWSECTIONLINK__ on it, and then I could probably make a script to show a new messages box when that page gets edited. JOEYTJE50TALK pull my finger 10:26, October 16, 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, the script is really easy. I've written one up and I think walrus has too. Suppa chuppa 03:10, October 18, 2011 (UTC)
Crash and burn - UGGH! Right now Wikia is trying to make the website more visually pleasing, so they forget about their other customers and let new, amateurs in and **** it up for everyone else. Maybe we should move again? I dunno... --中亚人/中亞人 (Chinasian/Jeffwang16) • 跟我谈话 21:49, October 21, 2011 (UTC)
- Move again? When was the first time we moved? Suppa chuppa 23:25, October 21, 2011 (UTC)
- The problem is technical, not in our heads. It's going to eat our already outlandishly high job queue. ʞooɔ 02:48, October 25, 2011 (UTC)
Comment - If we are going to let talk pages be on User:username/Talk, are we going to make user talk pages be disabled, for example hiding them with CSS? Or are we still allowing that, but only recommending /Talk pages. If we are doing the second, we can expect almost everyone using user talk pages anyway. JOEYTJE50TALK pull my finger 08:57, October 25, 2011 (UTC)
- If you mean disable message walls, I imagine that will somehow, some way, be against the ToU. 19:19, October 25, 2011 (UTC)
Closed - Discussion has died down. We have a while until Message Walls are fully released, and whether they will be optional or not is still up in the air. If they become mandatory, we'll cross that hurdle when we get there. 02:36, November 4, 2011 (UTC)
