I have an idea, but I'm not sure if it's feasible, so if someone could clarify if it's possible, that would be appreciated.

Idea - We have a vast amount of contributors, a majority being i.p. editors, and an even larger number of viewers. I got to thinking and I haven't really been able to find a simple way for these people to communicate to us easily unless they purposely create an account to contribute on the yew grove, or click a check on the main page poll... so I'm wondering if it's possible to create a comments section on the main page of our site... and if it's possible? What I had in mind was a small comments template, like we do for the wiki post or the poll, where users can freely leave comments, suggestions, complaints etc without needing to log in. The comments that come in could be post on a adjacent project page, etc in sequence they are left (we could use AJAX on it to auto-refresh), and archived as needed. This will allow us to quickly and effectively understand what our users think be it complaints, comments, suggestions, etc. If we find a large portion of editors leaving comments saying we need to focus more on quest outlines, then we should implement something to reflect this.... if we find a large number of requests asking for video guides on content, perhaps we should create a video project to help address this.

Then again, I'm not sure how possible it is to create this. It must freely accept comments (perhaps we can limit it to a certain number of characters) and post them in an accessible location. Also, I'm not sure how we can filter users from entering similar comments and suggestions over and over again, but I'm sure we can put some kind of limiter like the poll has (which allows 1 vote per i.p)...

Anyways, I'm interested in ideas, potential, suggestions or possibility. Let's try to put the community's needs and wants before our own. I think this is a good way to address some of that.

Discussion[edit source]

Comment - I think this would be a nice idea, but I have a fear it would be easy to exploit for spamming, advertising, and other vulgar content. If it were to be featured in a prominent area, this could be a huge issue. I also don't think it would be a good idea to archive these comments, as it would quickly turn into scores and scores of pages that no one ever reads or visits or makes use of. kitty.pngPsycho Robot talkSilver bar.png 08:22, January 14, 2011 (UTC)

So perhaps an archive of them, we could simply tally them into categories and delete the comments after a said period of time... Complaints, Comments, Suggestions, etc. would have their own heading and we can simply tally the majority of comments into subsections... (Website Design Suggestion = 45) (Quest Suggestions = 256), etc... that's only if we won't archive. 13:42, January 14, 2011 (UTC)

Question - Isn't this actually very similar to Forum:RuneScape:Feedback? That is a place for feedback(/comments) for what we should do. I don't think it would be a good idea to transclude it on the mainpage, because that would be almost guaranteed spam. It should have a link from the main page too though. Else it is too hard to find it. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 08:34, January 14, 2011 (UTC)

I'm not sure you understand the proposal. "I don't think it would be a good idea to transclude it on the mainpage, because that would be almost guaranteed spam." The box you leave comments in would be on the main page, then the comments appear on a different page. Also, does anyone know of an extension like this? And the point is we don't want to make people log in, or navigate the website extensively looking for the place to do this. A simple place to leave a comment would be great. Forums don't do that. 13:42, January 14, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - I was on a wiki earlier today (don't ask me which one, I can't remember) and at the bottom of a mainspace page was a comments thing a bit like how blogs work. We could try and found out information about that or we could see if we could set something up like the GEMW script that you type something into it and it will paste it on a page like RuneScape:Comments or something similar. That's not very hard to make. I believe that is for new wikis, to replace the talk page system we use. It is, for example, found at [[w:c:yup:Cake]]. I think we need to contact wikia for this. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 21:50, January 14, 2011 (UTC)
Hmm, looking at that it may be better to try and make something like the GEMW script. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 01:53, January 15, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - As sentra mentioned the comments thing, would it be possible to have the comments extention (?) enable solely for that page? 222 talk 10:42, January 14, 2011 (UTC)

This would be cool. Can you leave a link to that wiki Sentra. I'd like to see what they have done. 13:42, January 14, 2011 (UTC)

Neutral - Per Psycho. While I'd like to assume people won't go spamming, it's simply unrealistic. Advertisements etc. are inevitable. bad_fetustalk 14:18, January 14, 2011 (UTC)

Test run - Put it into action for a few days, like Pharos said on Forum:RuneScape:Feedback. See how it goes, and decide from there. Real Nub 19:18, January 14, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - I didn't understand the proposal very well (that's why i asked about it) but now i think i get it. I think we should contact wikia about having the blog system enabled in a special way, that we have a comment box for comments on the RuneScape:Feedback(or :Comments or whatever name it will get) page and on the main page. The Feedback page would work the same as blogs (intro talk, with below comments) but it will not be enabled for a namespace but for one page. As this would require the blogging extension to be enabled, i think we have to contact wikia. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 21:50, January 14, 2011 (UTC)

As long as it means that talk pages will not be replaced with the comments section. I consider the on-article comments section one of the worst ideas of all time, for reasons I will elaborate on if it's not already obscenely obvious. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 23:55, January 14, 2011 (UTC)
Yes, totally agree. We wanna look professional. Not a chatroom. I suggested we use it for RuneScape:Feedback(or something else) page only, and have an comments box on the main page. So, we don't have the system anywhere else than RS:FB, with a comments box on the main page. Of course, i don't think anyone would want the comment box instead of talk page. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 11:21, January 15, 2011 (UTC)
Alright. I agree with that wholeheartedly. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 13:45, January 15, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - I was unaware of the forum you created Joey, sorry if I hi-jacked your section. Guess it dropped off the main part and I didn't see it, lol.

No problem. The discussion died there anyway Wink JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 11:21, January 15, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - So, is this possible? Would an expert in coding let me know?

I don't think experts of coding would know, but rather Wikia Staff. It is about an extension, and not easy to make for coders(and JS would probably be needed, which is not supported for every browser(or something) and we have to make giving feedback possible for everyone). JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 20:02, January 18, 2011 (UTC)

Technically impossible - To the best of my knowledge, anyways. Ajraddatz 20:05, January 18, 2011 (UTC)

[21:07] <sannse> it's not possible to enable for a single page, sorry
Yep. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 20:10, January 18, 2011 (UTC)
But, that doesn't mean we can't make the page anyway and use the current talk page system. Just let them add a new section, and give their feedback. And maybe Ryan, Gaz, or of course Q, could make something similar to the price submitting thing we have. But new section and normal edit box would work just fine too. Closed - Not possible. Ajraddatz 23:32, January 22, 2011 (UTC)
