Because we have the event team's notice show up to advertise for new events, new users see the little bubble on their screen as an advertisement. This means they click it away the moment they see it, without reading it. This can cause problems, especially when a good faith user is doing something that violates the policies. For example, if they are uploading personal images without knowing that's voilating RS:NOT#HOST, they get warned, and immediately click away the new messages bubble, thinking it is an ET advertisement. To fix this, I propose we change the new messages notice to be clearly different from the ET notice. Letting the ET notice keep its look, but making the new messages bubble a lot clearer will make users actually read what the notice says, and click to see their new messages. If we would add the following code to [[MWI:W.CSS|the wikia.css file]], it would only change the new messages bubble to look like this.

#WikiaNotifications div[data-type="1"] {
position: absolute;
min-width: 940px;
margin-top: -35px;
left:0px;
display: block;
background-color: #ffce7b;
background-image: -moz-linear-gradient(top, #ffce7b 35%, #ffba67 65%);
background-image: -webkit-gradient(linear, 0% 0%, 0% 100%, color-stop(35%, #ffce7b), color-stop(65%, #ffba67));
background-image: -o-linear-gradient(top,#ffce7b,#ffce7b 35%,#ffba67 65%,#ffba67);
color: #000;
}
#WikiaNotifications div[data-type="1"] a {
color: #000;
}

If we would make this change, we should let the ET notice stay the same, because if we make the ET advert different too, they might still see the new messages bubble as advertisement.

Also, if any changes like font color, size or whatever need to be made, that is likely also possible. Just suggest it below.

Support - As nominator. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 10:33, January 3, 2012 (UTC)

Question/Comment - I assume this was proposed mostly because of this? Tbh I don't really see how it makes a huge difference. If someone doesn't know what the bubble means, or that they should even pay attention to it, this isn't going to help. Might as well be a big Click Here! if all you're trying to do is get it noticed. --cqm talk 10:51, January 3, 2012 (UTC)

It is indeed because of that, but also because of some previous situations where the same happened that new users didn't see the notice. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 12:25, January 3, 2012 (UTC)

Neutral change of colour, oppose widening it to fill up the whole width of the page - It's obstructive and ugly that way. Also, I don't really see any real benefit to doing this. 222 talk 11:31, January 3, 2012 (UTC)

Support - Can't see a reason not. Bunny ears.pngAliddell TCELeather boots.png 12:28, January 3, 2012 (UTC)

Strong oppose Widening, Support recolour - As per above, the widening of the box is very very obtrusive on the Oasis skin, and I don't want it to be that way. On terms of recolouring it, keep it within reasonable colours for the wiki theme. RSN: Warthog Rhys Talk Completionist's cape... Coming soon. 15:52, January 3, 2012 (UTC)

Oppose - Really unnecessary. Sometimes, when I browse/edit articles/images/whatever, I give it a higher priority than the new message, which I will check when I'm done. It's highly annoying having that pop-up following you, but hiding it may cause me to forget the message. Honestly, I don't see the problem with the current message. Rather huge and bright at the top of the page. I have never ever not noticed it. User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 15:56, January 3, 2012 (UTC)

Could you please remember that the official skin is the Wikia skin and this does not affect monobook users at all? The problem with the current new messages pop up in the Wikia skin, which is already following you when you scroll, is that it looks exactly like the ET notice and is clicked away by newer users quite often. Oh, terribly sorry, I didn't know that. Now I may sound very stupid, but what is ET? User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 20:34, January 3, 2012 (UTC)

In this context, it means Events Team. Apologies for telling suppa to post this.  a proofreader ▸  20:40, January 3, 2012 (UTC)
^Lol^. I didn't even know the ET made use of such messages. Anyway, OK, we could modify the New Message notice to less resemble an ET notice. User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 07:33, January 4, 2012 (UTC)

Oppose widening, neutral recolouring - If we're gonna make it that length we may as well go back to the old way of informing people about new talk page messages. As for the colour thing, that may help but then again it may just result in people thinking that it's some sort of special ET event What I've done Ciphrius Kane Talk 21:56, January 3, 2012 (UTC)

Support recolour, oppose widening - I really don't think it's a big deal, but if someone is being bothered by it, sure, we can do orange. I don't like the concept of making it wide though, that just makes it annoying. Hofmic Talk 00:53, January 4, 2012 (UTC)

Will this affect Monobook? --Andorin (Talk) (Contribs) 00:58, January 4, 2012 (UTC)

No. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 03:12, January 4, 2012 (UTC)

Will this affect those who use the default Oasis theme? (And I noticed the screenshot was of the holiday theme, in which the color looks horrid. I assume you intended that ugly brown thing to be in the ugly brown theme, in which context it would look slightly better.) --LiquidTalk 02:51, January 4, 2012 (UTC)

That depends on if you have the default bubble code in your css. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 03:12, January 4, 2012 (UTC)

Support - I like. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 03:12, January 4, 2012 (UTC)

Oppose both, different idea - A full-width, bright coloured bar with hardly any text that follows you up a page is not a good idea. The wiki's medieval, brown theme with a vivid orange strip = nty. I'd like to propose something new, but I'm not sure if it can work. I'd be in favour of sampling a small notice that would appear once in the middle of a page when one gets a new message, with a link to their talk page or the option to cancel it. The normal NewMessages box would then operate as usual. It's difficult to explain exactly what I mean, but if anyone uses the internet browser Safari, in general I'm talking about the box that appears in the browser when you're not connected to the internet, etc. I'd also be contemplating changing the text to something like "A new message has been left for you on your talk page", as we'll have a lot more space to meddle with, and it will be absolutely clear to new users what the box means. The point would be to prevent it from being overly irritating; the box will appear once, and the reader will either choose to read it now or later, but they will certainly be aware that someone is trying to contact them, which will fix the problem of vandals supposedly not knowing that they had been left warnings. I had to write this in a rush, so I'm sure I've left out details on what exactly it is I'm proposing, but I'll be able to make a proper prototype later. Ronan Talk 11:38, January 4, 2012 (UTC)

I've got some questions for you then, would it be such popup like the images have when you click on them, so you can't click aside it? And will the regular new messages bubble still be there? Also, after how long will the popup you're talking about reappear after a user clicked it away? JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 12:58, January 4, 2012 (UTC)
Something very loosely along those lines, although you can actually simply click anywhere else on the screen for the image popup to close. Ideally I'd only like to have this notice appear once; directly after the message is sent, so that it will appear instantly when the recipient logs in, or as soon as the recipient goes to a different page. After that, our current NewMessages bubble will appear as normal. I'm trying to make a prototype now, but I'd be lying if I told you I had any idea what I'm doing. Ronan Talk 20:09, January 4, 2012 (UTC)

Support - I like the idea, just make it a more noticeable colour. Hair 22:17, January 4, 2012 (UTC)

Concept - What if we could add a second option to no longer receive event team messages in a popup (likely by saving a cookie). This would have the advantage that those who don't care about ET messages (like myself) would only have to see them once (until the cookie expires or I delete it, that is). After all, we can still see the ET stuff in the site notice. Hofmic Talk 07:03, January 5, 2012 (UTC)

Weak oppose widening, support colour change - Widening the notice is unnecessarily intrusive. However, I see no problem with changing the colour to differentiate it from the ET notices. But do make the colour contrast more with the brown background. Matt (t) 07:54, January 5, 2012 (UTC)

Oppose widening, support change of colour - per above posts. --Touhou FTW Zaros symbol.png 09:45, January 8, 2012 (UTC)

Oppose - The wiki theme is orange/brown-ish and changing the colour green to orange will make it worse if it's not good enough already. If there is going to be a difference in colour, change the colour of the events notice. Adult chameleon (automatic).png Anurin Talk · Sign! . 22:02, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

Colour change - Owait, green colour was from Xmas theme. make that the standard for New message popups. It's in good contrast with the current theme. Adult chameleon (automatic).png Anurin Talk · Sign! . 22:33, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - Today there was some message by Wikia linking to a different, unrelated wiki. Initially confused by what the message was about, I clicked it, hoping for an explanation. Realizing it was a different wiki, I immediately closed the browser. I'm not interested in Wikia's administration tips, other wiki's advertising, or anything. Is there any way to make those a different colour as well? Hofmic Talk 23:44, January 9, 2012 (UTC)

Yes, you can do that by adding styles to #WikiaNotifications div[data-type="5"], in the same way as in the block of code at the proposal. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 10:15, January 10, 2012 (UTC)
PS: the ET notice is #WikiaNotifications div[data-type="2"] JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 10:16, January 10, 2012 (UTC)

Closed - The new message bubble's color will be changed. Suppa chuppa Talk 00:23, January 18, 2012 (UTC)
