During the previous wikifest, the biggest problem I had was that I was unable to get messages out. Anything and everything I said was carried away by a flood of message written by users not paying the slightest bit of attention. While I do not believe that wikifest CCs should be muted all the time, there are periods of time when they need to be. For all wikifests after this last one, I would like to propose that a (trusted) user (likely the Fest Chair or another Fest Mod) who plans to be present create a clan chat for the fest (for example, if a trusted user already has a functioning wiki cc, we can use that, or the Fest Chair can create a new one for the sake of the fest). This way, the cc can be muted, un-muted, block users from it, and rank users to it at our leisure. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 12:27, March 21, 2010 (UTC)

Discussion

Support - For the part that I attended (the costume competition), it was very difficult to read any messages at all, due to the spam. --LiquidTalk 12:29, March 21, 2010 (UTC)

Support Neutral, slight oppose - This was suggested last time... Chicken7 >talk 12:38, March 21, 2010 (UTC)

Lol, Chicken, what difference does that make? A lot of the consensuses we get here are not implemented, due to community laziness. --LiquidTalk 12:39, March 21, 2010 (UTC)
I think last time the proposal was to completely mute the cc all the time. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 12:45, March 21, 2010 (UTC)
Wait. So this proposal is to only mute the cc sometimes, when announcements need to be made? That could just create more confusion, in my honest opinion. Players can talk in public chat, or even private chat. Also, players can then get confused about whether they can talk or not. Some may even be scared to talk because they might get kicked (if they didn't know about the alternating cc-wide mute). ALSO, if the cc is muted the whole time, it can help players distinguish when an announcement is being made. They may be listening to all chats, getting spammed by public, then suddenly see red text in the chatbox. They'll know to change to clan chat and listening to the announcement, rather than having to work out if something is an announcement or random banter in the cc. AND, this just creates extra work for the cc owner and planners, who'll have to keep in contact with each other about when to open and close the cc, and may cause delays in announcements or planning. I'll only support if the cc is muted full time. Chicken7 >talk 13:11, March 21, 2010 (UTC)

Support - I was going to suggest the same thing Lol bad_fetustalk 12:41, March 21, 2010 (UTC)

Support Last night was a bit of a riot with the amount of people talking and doing their own thing. Personally I didn't ever know what was happening other than the people spamming "Teleport home" or "run to the [email protected]@@" all of which was just people telling other people to do things when moderators hadn't actually said anything. Muting everyone in the clan chat isnt a fun thing to do but if its the only way we can have some order and structure to the fest then so be it. Oppose - Wikifest is always going to have spam and confusion and doing things like muting the CC isn't going to really help, but I think it would hurt the fests in general.

Consider the average fest attendent. We're inviting them to an event, asking them to join a CC, and then telling them that they can't talk in the CC, that its only for fest mods. I would suspect that would piss off a fair number of people and possibly have them looking for a different CC or event, one they could actually participate in. Comment - I have a feeling that if attendees can't talk in the clan chat, they'll just spam public chat more than usual, which will still result in missed messages. This is easily solved by turning off public chat, but is everyone going to do that?  Tien  19:50, March 21, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - Note that this proposal says that the chat should only be muted at certain times. It's hard to explain just how difficult it is to run a wikifest when you can't effectively get the message out to everyone, but I ensure that I may never want to run another fest unless I am sure I can get messages across, no matter how fun the rest of doing it was. It's that stressful. This proposal does NOT say that the cc should always be muted to ranks only. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 20:25, March 21, 2010 (UTC)

Support - The more popular the Wiki gets, the more people will come to the 'fests, which makes for more spam and confusion. I think muting the cc will really help to get at least some order. Ancient talisman.png Oil4 Talk 12:30, March 22, 2010 (UTC)
