On the 18th of this month, Wikia will be performing some load testing to see if the wiki is ready to begin use of a new extension for our large user base. This extension is known as Chat. Along with a few other select wikis, we will be a participant in the testing for their newest feature. Depending on the results of the load testing, we may receive Chat early next week.
Chat is similar to IRC in various aspects, as well as to other forms of communication. There are ChatMods (similar to Operators in IRC) who are users with the sysop group-right with the ability to kick other users (similar to Clan Chat and IRC) and then everyday users. This feature will still be in early-stage testing, and thus will have various bugs that need ironing out. While we just had the Clan Chat and Friends Chat overhaul in RuneScape, we can expand on the community with this feature and potentially make it even a help desk of sorts. For the current time, only logged-in users can access the feature and will appear as a module below the Spotlights on the WikiaRail if the user has logged-on.
The Chat project is lead by Danny (toughpigs) and any questions should be directed to his talk page. Should we obtain the feature for testing, we may go on for a month or two of debugging it prior to an open-request among all wikis to be seen on [[Wikia:Blog:Wikia Staff Blog|the staff blogs on the Community Central]]. At one point in the development of this project, it was said to be the replacement and successor to Monaco's Shoutbox. We may agree to disagree on this point, but one would like to see the outcomes of this feature and discussion.
Comment - Thanks for the heads up. Do you know if it will work with the Monobook skin?00:30, April 16, 2011 (UTC)
- Sadly no. Despite all previous builds and current build acting as a new target rather than changing your current window to Chat, it doesn't appear to function in Monobook. Ryan PM 00:45, April 16, 2011 (UTC)
- While you won't see the module, you can always type in Special:Chat into the url to access it or add it to your toolbar (might want to add in in your JS for your toolbar). Ryan PM 01:23, April 16, 2011 (UTC)
I personally can't wait for this, though I think that this also might be a good chance to disconnect wiki admin and "chat" operator. Or, since that would require a new usergroup, maybe not >.> ajr 01:01, April 16, 2011 (UTC)
- Just one of a few I have been waiting for as well. Chatmoderator, illusive no. Ryan PM 01:23, April 16, 2011 (UTC)
