Forum:Changing our Skin
Did you know that changing a website's background to black and the text to white or gray, that it can save up to 20% of a website's energy output? Well, now you do! If every major United States website did this, we could shut down four large coal plants in Texas! This wiki is a major candidate to join the growing community of wikis attempting become more eco-friendly. I have consulted an admin on this wiki, and he thinks it might be a good idea, and he recommended that I brought it here. This would be a major renovation to this wiki, and I would like to let the community discuss and vote on whether to change it. - I am sure the workers at those coal plants in Texas would be very happy to be out of work Atlandy 21:03, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
Neutral - I have started testing of this work by placing it in my custom monaco. I used the text directly from the Christmas Lights Wiki (hope you don't mind), and so far, I'm somewhat getting used to it. It comes with a few problems though, the sitenotice is designed as a white box, so changing text would eliminate text in there, excluding links, and when you highlight over them. Some other headings also do this. The category box found at the bottom of each mainspace page and other select pages that are categorized appears as a solid white box against a black background. I have also did a test using Task Manager to find out the byte usage, 335k when using the default white, and 333k when using black. While doing this, I turned off everything else that was running besides the Firefox browser, but, there is room for error. Also, you said that if every major United States websites did this, it could close four coal factories in Texas. One, the workers wouldn't be happy (as mentioned earlier), and two, there are a bunch of other larger websites than us here that, even if we did change, there would be little impact unless every website followed this. So, I'll continue the test run of this, and see how I like it for later comments. ~MuzTalk 21:14, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
Strong Oppose - No. You said that if all sites change this, then the power plants can be shut. Right, "if"! I see no reason at all to change the skin just because it could save enough electricity for a power plant to be shut down. Oil4 Talk 21:22, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
- ~75% of monitors used are LCD-based.
- LCD monitors use either a negligable amount less, the same, or more energy to display black compared to white.
- Therefore many users may end up saving little or even using more energy.

Users who have a CRT, plasma or OLED monitor can switch to a dark skin at their discrestion. I don't think it would help us to use a dark skin by default.
Besides, I think the wiki looks better with a white background.21:47, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
Oppose - Is it me or is this a bit out of place or a tad pointless? "The Yew Grove is a page where community members can discuss larger changes to the wiki, such as policy proposal" - and I don't really see how this is going to help the Wiki... We care about providing best information, and making it hard to read would not be in interest of the wiki. Doucher4000******r4000 22:15, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
- I told him to bring it to the Yew Grove.
Oppose - I have my own views about enviro-nazis and the entire environmental movement, but I keep those views separate from this wiki for a very specific reason. TEbuddy 23:55, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
Oppose - The world is eventually going to run out of coal and oil anyway. Why slow down going completely Green? Besides, that coal plant thing sounds a bit far fetched and very unlikely. --— Enigma 17:57, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
Strong Oppose - Having gone to school for a degree in Geophysics, I can honestly say that I have an educated and very strong opinion on this and I get pretty fired up when I see things to be done to "go green". If the entire world did this it still wouldn't make a difference. If you want to discuss what looks the best and propose ways to increase the speed things download/upload, then I'm all for it..but not for the reasons above..and I should probably stop there. Comment Guys, this isn't a bashing of the politcal views presented in the proposal, the yew grove really isn't the place for that sort of thing. --Serenity1137 07:09, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
