Hiya, and thanks for visiting my thread.

I'd like to propose a redo of our combat calculators. As in, make them more interactive, maybe a little more colourful, and easier to find. Here are some direct ideas:

  1. More colorful, with more images and more interactive. Something that looks closer to this: http://runescape.salmoneus.net/skill-calculators/magic.html .
  2. Moved into an easier place to find, perhaps on the homepage, and more out in the open. I know that a lot of peopel use those calculators, and since most don't know they exist here, then they go to places like Sal's Realm.
  3. Add a calculator drop-down to the "On the wiki" tab.
  4. Make the list of calculators a little more organized and easy to find, like adding all the general skill ones to the top, and all the additional ones to the bottom.

That's pretty much it for the improvements. Please vote on whether or not you think we could improve them, and MOVE THEM.

Thanks!

Discussion

Support - As the creator of this thread, I support the idea and hope it gets done. Zamorak godsword detail.png techguy1001Talk 23:38, January 14, 2012 (UTC)

Support seems like a good idea and something to spice it up!Virtus mask chathead.pngDisturbed 94Virtus mask chathead.png

Support higher visibility - A small column in the main page, maybe? And more redirects should be made to lead to the calculators. The calculators themselves are good now without any flashy stuff though, in my opinion. --Void Knight 00:03, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

Support - I mean like compare Calculators to this. Our calculators just say "You would need 4xp to level." There should be methods to train it, like this when you input info. Also, our calculators are plain they need to be centred and have skill icons make the backgrounds different etc --Cake detail.pngCaek iz ossumChocolate cake detail.png talk om nom 00:13, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

Look at this. What calculator are you looking at that says "You would need 4xp to level."? There is no way to change the plain look of the calculators with the current script, and personally I don't think it's necessary. ʞooɔ 00:17, January 15, 2012 (UTC)
  1. How would we do this? You can't just say that you want the calculators to be more colorful or like some other site's...the script would have to be adjusted (I know Stew was working on something new but I can't find him.) We can improve the appearance of the output fairly easily by altering the template, but the input will stay bland until the script is improved.
  2. Since we removed developer's blogs from {{Updates}}, there's a lot of space on the left part of the main page. We could add a calculators module to it, but the space might be better suited for something else.
  3. Which tab would the calculator dropdown go under, Guides or Databases? Do either of those fit, or would we have to adjust the titles of the level one navigation?
  4. I've always found the calculators pretty easy to navigate. Ordering them by type would just add confusion, not stop it.

The main thing we need to do is just make more calculators, not worry about how they look or how they're advertised. ʞooɔ 00:15, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

Answer to #3: They would go under On The Wiki, if you ask me.
Answer to the bottom one: I disagree, I personally think that it would dramatically improve the usage of our calculators.
More calculators? I was thinking less calculators! Other sites keep it simple: One calculator for each skill, we have around 5-10 for each skill. Also, cook, do you support or oppose? Zamorak godsword detail.png techguy1001Talk 00:20, January 15, 2012 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure we can't edit the "on the wiki" tab. Hofmic Talk 00:29, January 15, 2012 (UTC)
Then perhaps we create a new tab just for the calculators? We have a little open space on the top level tab. Zamorak godsword detail.png techguy1001Talk 00:38, January 15, 2012 (UTC)
We can't alter "On the Wiki". That section is off-limits; the only two options really are Guides and Databases (or whatever we decide to call them). There is not enough space for a Calculators top level tab and I would oppose having one even if there was. Partitioning calculators based on type instead of by topic is a really bad idea in my book. It's easier this way. And while we are better off combining calculators that need combining, and removing duplicates, there are still lots of missing skill calculators, and and endless variety of special calculators we could make. Also, this thread is getting very messy with all the indents. Try and reply to the correct person. ʞooɔ 00:42, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

Support [Edit conflict x2] - I agree that they definitely should be more visible. As for making them "flashier", I'll agree provided it doesn't go too overboard. While admittedly, a better looking calculator isn't necessarily more functional, people are by nature attracted to shiny things. Hofmic Talk 00:16, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

I agree with you entirely. Zamorak godsword detail.png techguy1001Talk 00:20, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - Yes, we have some good calculators, like Calculator:Woodcutting as Cook pointed out, but the GEMW "calculators" like [[Calculator:Construction/Flatpacks2]] are the ones that are more troublesome. And the woodcutting calculator only takes into aspect trees and ivy, not the Jadinko lair stuff, for example. I really question if we need more calculators. Instead, I'd rather see our existing ones improved (after all, we have a lot more calculators than Tip.it, but there, you simply choose the skill, here, you choose the skill, read through a big table, and try and hope you pick the right calculator). It also would be really great if there was a way to grab your XP from the hiscores like most other sites calculators do. Hofmic Talk 00:28, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

I simply could not exaplain to you how much I agree with you. " I really question if we need more calculators. Support 1, 3 & 4 - Should be possible to make our calculators (which I never use, so I don't really see the problem) even better. I just looked at some and most are fine already, but others are just tables... User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 07:52, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

We can, it would just be utterly out of place there. Ronan Talk 18:01, January 15, 2012 (UTC)
Yes we can. We can't take the default things off, but we can add to it. ɳex undique 19:33, January 15, 2012 (UTC)
Not officially, shush. ʞooɔ 20:52, January 15, 2012 (UTC)
Didn't they patch that? *hopes not* Hofmic Talk 21:02, January 15, 2012 (UTC)

Comment - Why not add Calculators to the database tab? Seems to me like it would be more in place there.  Quest Icon Crest.png Guthix1110 Quest Icon Crest.png 02:45, January 16, 2012 (UTC)

Support improvement - Calculators are meant to be listed under portals, and portals are meant to be listed under the Databases tab. And every article is meant to link to their respective portal. So in effect, every article that is about a topic will link to that topic's calculator. Maybe we are just too lazy or too busy to ever finish what we start? Chicken7 >talk 05:48, January 17, 2012 (UTC)

I'm (slowly) adding portalboxes ([[Template:Portalbox]]) to pages, but there's a lot of pages and it has to be done manually. It would be great for a hand, but sooner or later, most pages should be covered in the portalboxes (provided they exist in appropriate categories). Hofmic Talk 06:34, January 17, 2012 (UTC)
Nice work! Hopefully more people will be able to help you out, and that this will improve notability of the calculators. Chicken7 >talk 07:21, January 17, 2012 (UTC)

Comment- So, what have we come to? I'm a little fuzzy on what will happen next. Admins, can you make the calculators more visible, as it seems that majority agreed that that should be done.... does anybody in perticular want to start a team to get the calculators redone? Zamorak godsword detail.png techguy1001Talk 02:11, January 20, 2012 (UTC)

We already have a WikiGuild. ʞooɔ 03:26, January 20, 2012 (UTC)
^Wikiguilds are in an RFD process now. If it were to pass, how would we proceed with this thread? sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 18:27, January 24, 2012 (UTC)
WikiGuilds are dead now btw. Matt (t) 08:49, February 7, 2012 (UTC)

Pre-closure question - So who is actually going to go through and make all the calculators purtier? sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 15:51, February 11, 2012 (UTC)

Support/Comments - I would also like to see the calculators more interactive, prettier, and better organised (I've heard players say that ours are less convenient to use than those on other fansites). Regarding the organisation, I think some small calculators are best embedded into the relevant page (like the one on Dragonkin lamp). Judging from the feedback I got on my proposal to install a new calculator script, the calculator wikiguild is indeed dead. But yes, if someone "starts a team", I'd be happy to make/edit some calculators. (Also any feedback on my proposal would be appreciated ;)) Stewbasic 21:32, February 16, 2012 (UTC)

Closed - Discussion has died. There is no consensus to add a Calculators box to the main page. Users should be bold when improving calculators, but should also be careful not to be too bold. Users should also be bold when improving the layout of the main Calculators page. I will add a Calculators section to the Databases section on the wiki navigation.
