Forum:Be careful when moving pages -- double redirects
As I type this there are twenty-two (albeit fixed) double redirects listed on Special:Doubleredirects. That's pretty crazy.
So, this is a reminder to all users: When you move a page, first have a look at its Special:Whatlinkshere entry and search for redirect pages. If you find any, edit them to point towards the name to which you're going to move your page, rather than its current location. Otherwise what you end up getting is a redirect page which points to a redirect page, called a double redirect. It breaks the redirect process and is annoying to clean up.
Example: I want to move dragon long to dragon longsword. 'Dragon long' will become a redirect to 'dragon longsword'. But I (hypothetically) have a look at what links to 'dragon long' and discover that D long redirects to it. So before moving 'dragon long' I edit 'D long' to redirect to 'dragon longsword', thereby avoiding a double redirect and gaining karma.
Twenty-two double redirects is quite possibly the largest list of DRs that I've ever seen, and I pity whoever had to clean them up. Please, guys and gals, exercise diligence when moving pages. --Andorin (Talk) (Contribs) 19:22, October 21, 2010 (UTC)
Oppose - I love double redirects and will frequently create them intentionally.19:24, October 21, 2010 (UTC)
- Against your opposition on the grounds that I didn't actually make a proposal. Also, there's a special hell for child molesters, people who talk at the theater, and people who intentionally make double redirects on the RS wiki. --Andorin (Talk) (Contribs) 19:26, October 21, 2010 (UTC)
