Refer to: Forum:New bot and protection for Exchange namespace

Reasons

  • New items are no longer being added into the official Grand Exchange Database after the World Wakes update on 4 March 2013.
  • The official GED stopped updating on 2 April 2013.
  • Our bots can no longer update our Exchange pages.

Proposal

  • Add a sitenotice to encourage users to update Exchange prices.
  • Reverse the changes made on the earlier thread.
    • Un-protect the Exchange namespace.
    • Allow users to update Exchange pages using the easy-update Exchange script (input box), which we had earlier, at least temporarily.
    • Add back any Exchange-related abuse filters.
    • Remove the edit button on the Exchange pages.

Please discuss.   az talk   05:07, April 7, 2013 (UTC)

Discussion

Support - If our bots can't update it then we need to do it manually, even if it means potential vandals vandalising. --Recent uploads SpineTalkGuest book 05:12, April 7, 2013 (UTC)

Vandals don't vandalise... MolMan 05:13, April 7, 2013 (UTC)

Question - Wait, why can't the bots update it anymore? sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 05:12, April 7, 2013 (UTC)

I'm also curious about this, is the API not given to us anymore? Hair 05:14, April 7, 2013 (UTC)

??????????? - Has anything been asked to Jagex about this? MolMan 05:17, April 7, 2013 (UTC)

Good question. I like how instead of asking the important questions like you and Fergie did, we instead decided to go with the nuclear option. Blaze_fire.png12.png 05:20, April 7, 2013 (UTC)
This screws over more than just us. I imagine RuneScript runs off the same thing, as will Tip.it, and the various other GE sites. But I have no idea how we can get in touch with them. The fansite support forums perhaps? cqm 09:44, 7 Apr 2013 (UTC) (UTC)

Sooner the better - Already seen someone in-game realise that our prices are wrong. HaidroH rune.pngEagle feather 3.pngCandle (blood red).png 1XqyDNM.png Crystal triskelion fragment 3.pngHazelmere's signet ring.png 05:48, April 7, 2013 (UTC)

Comments/Answers

  • Wait, why can't the bots update it anymore? Our bots check the official website API for information, but the API information hasn't been updated by Jagex. This link shows the last update was on 2 April 2013. The price of Cannonball on 2 April 2013 (1364860800000) was 118 coins. Btw, 1364860800000 is in Unix time.
  • Has anything been asked to Jagex about this? Bug report tickets were filed on March 2013 and 5 April 2013, but nothing has been done so far. See this, this and this.

Hope that helps.   az talk   11:04, April 7, 2013 (UTC)

I'd really like to have one of our Fansite Reps – Fergie, Cook, Ryan – ask Jagex about this before making a stance. MolMan 13:44, April 7, 2013 (UTC)
I've posted a thread in the fansite forums asking what's up. sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 17:27, April 7, 2013 (UTC)
Thread link please?   az talk   00:03, April 8, 2013 (UTC)
Not possible, only those added to the forum can see it. No reply yet anyway. sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 00:45, April 8, 2013 (UTC)

Comment - If no one has any objections, I'd like to be bold and rush this through. The prices aren't getting updated at all and there is no back-up system (the update button uses the API too iirc). Out of date prices aren't any good to us or our readers. cqm 17:23, 7 Apr 2013 (UTC) (UTC)

this. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 19:31, April 7, 2013 (UTC)
I would like to keep the thread open; however. So we can further analyze the situation depending on the feedback from Jagex. I highly doubt they want a broken GEDB. MolMan 19:33, April 7, 2013 (UTC)
It looks like a bug because if they were keeling it, it would've been removed from the website. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 19:35, April 7, 2013 (UTC)
I'm also curious as to how high of a priority it is for them to fix. MolMan 19:37, April 7, 2013 (UTC)
I'd agree with keeping this open for bug tracking, etc. My only issue right now is digging out the old method we used. cqm 23:58, 7 Apr 2013 (UTC) (UTC)
I think Joey should be familiar with this script: MediaWiki:Common.js/gemwupdate.js. Old method here: User:Quarenon/gemwupdate.js.   az talk   00:03, April 8, 2013 (UTC)
We're going to need Quarenon's script for the time being. The Common.js subpage queries the API. After a quick console test, it looks like Q's script need a little updating but I'm going to have to call 0800-JOEY to figure out why. cqm 00:33, 8 Apr 2013 (UTC) (UTC)
"Hi, I'm not in right now. Please leave a message after the caek... ... ... ... CAEK!" *beep* MolMan 00:40, April 8, 2013 (UTC)
It works as is. Nothing appears as if updating is required. Ryan PM 05:22, April 8, 2013 (UTC)
The script works. But its Jagex's prices that are not being updated... Look at http://services.runescape.com/m=itemdb_rs/viewitem.ws?obj=4151. That price has been the same since 2-Apr-2013. We need to be able to update using in-game prices, i.e via an input box.   az talk   06:06, April 8, 2013 (UTC)
I understand that they aren't being updated. However it was a comment towards Quarenon's old script. Nothing seems like it needs fixing on that bit. Ryan PM 16:55, April 8, 2013 (UTC)

ummm - Is it fixed? It's slow, but it's happening. MolMan 18:54, April 8, 2013 (UTC)

RuneScript (which triggers TyBot's updates), has detected a GED update 7 hours ago, after not updating for 6 days. It appears to be fixed, but I'm inclined to keep an eye on it for now in case it's not completely fixed.
I'd also like to have a backup in case this happens again, with a set of guidelines that can be followed to implement it, not requiring a forum to be opened to gain consensus on doing what needs to be done to keep the prices as up to date as possible. However, as history shows that trying to gain consensus for multiple ideas in one thread generally goes badly, I'll make a new thread for it when this is closed.
I should look at edits before opening my mouth. The prices are not actually updating, just claiming to be. MolMan 00:13, April 9, 2013 (UTC)
The new items are still missing... Frown   az talk   00:46, April 9, 2013 (UTC)
Looks to me like the prices are updating correctly. I don't know how to account for missing items...some sort of whitelist for Quarenon's script to run on? cqm 01:34, 9 Apr 2013 (UTC) (UTC)
TyA said it wasn't. I should just shut up altogether...
Support - STFU mol MolMan 01:44, April 9, 2013 (UTC)
support - lol.   az talk   05:49, April 9, 2013 (UTC)

Update - A fix for this was pushed out last night. Are we still experiencing the issue? sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 20:40, April 9, 2013 (UTC)

While consensus does say I should shut up, I'd like to say that things look fine, but let's be sure and keep this open. I assume you got official word from Jagex, but what about the newer items of which az speaks? MolMan 20:45, April 9, 2013 (UTC)
I'm not seeing pneumatic gloves, released with TWW, on the official GED. I assume this part of the bug has yet to be fixed. Can we get some kind of Jagex response on this (maybe through the fansite support thread)? cqm 23:27, 9 Apr 2013 (UTC) (UTC)
What's why I asked. They fixed the issue last night. And I'm asking if there are any more so they can look into it again. sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 04:16, April 10, 2013 (UTC)
Just checked: the prices for ALL items on 9 April is the SAME as 8 April. New items post-TWW still unavailable.   az talk   08:07, April 10, 2013 (UTC)

They are looking into getting more information for us now. sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 06:22, April 14, 2013 (UTC)

Comment - Okay, so now that it's sort of working, I have a question. While I'm not in favor of the proposal here, it's fairly obvious we should have some sort of back-up system in place in case we have another Grand Exchange Database problem like this one. I think we should set it so that if a maximum of X days pass, where X is a value decided upon here, without a Grand Exchange update, then the original proposal here is implemented until the bot works again. I don't know if this is the best solution, but I do think we need some sort of back-up plan in case this happens again. Blaze_fire.png12.png 12:56, April 10, 2013 (UTC)

I'm planning on taking that to a new forum once the current issue is resolved.  —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Cåm (talk). 08:30, April 10, 2013
Awesome. Blaze_fire.png12.png 14:01, April 10, 2013 (UTC)

Close please - Considered resolved; new items post-TWW are still missing. We need a way of updating these items automatically using the input box method. Currently I'm the only one updating these items manually. I'm tired.   az talk   04:16, April 12, 2013 (UTC)

This request for closure was denied A user has requested closure for Allow users to edit Exchange namespace. Request denied. The reason given was: New thread needed for backup in case Jagex's Grand Exchange Database fails again.
I don't consider the issue resolved. Quarenon's old script does appear to work and has been added back in for the pages I believe not to be updating (pulled from your contribs). Joey's script will continue to run on other pages as normal. Wikia have also been contacted to temporarily remove the protection until the bug is fixed. It also took me far too long to realise Joey's script was in [[MediaWiki:Group-autoconfirmed.js]] Frown
The thread I'm planning on making is for if/when this happens again, rather than addressing the current issue. As such, I'm leaving this open until the bugs are completely fixed, including all items being correctly found on the GED.
If anyone's interested this bug is also affecting Tip.it, Zybez, GlobalRS and RuneScript (the items do not appear on their databases). RuneHQ has the item but not the GE price, so are largely in the same position as us. I'm unable to find anything GE related on RuneZone. Hey we're still ahead of the pack Wink cqm 10:10, 12 Apr 2013 (UTC) (UTC)

Update - It has been 48 days and Jagex still hasn't added the post-TWW items. Frown   az talk   07:52, April 21, 2013 (UTC)

I've asked Jagex again for an update on how that's coming along... sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 15:42, April 21, 2013 (UTC)
They gave you generic bs though, right? MolMan 15:43, April 21, 2013 (UTC)
Last time he said he would look into it. This time I'm not sure what he'll say. sssSp7p.pngIjLCqFF.png 15:44, April 21, 2013 (UTC)

Final update - It took Jagex 51 days to finally fix their GED. Post-TWW items are now available, and can be updated using our bots. [[MediaWiki:Group-autoconfirmed.js]] has been amended accordingly. If there were any other changes made regarding this issue, please undo them. Thanks!   az talk   07:19, April 25, 2013 (UTC)

Closed - The bug appears to be fixed. The changes to [[MediaWiki:Common.js]] have been reverted, and the edit button un-hidden from MediaWiki:Common.css. There is no reply from fansite support on whether it has been fixed at this time. Ty has added the new item ids to the list for price updating, so the prices should be updated as expected. Wikia has been contacted to re-protect the exchange namespace as before. Thread mentioned above can be found here. cqm 15:04, 25 Apr 2013 (UTC) (UTC)
