I'm Ben_Ryfos from RuneSlayer, and I'm here to discuss a possible affiliation with RuneScape Wiki. I've spoken with quite a few wikians, as well as the RuneSlayer team, and we've come up with a proposal for the wiki.

RuneSlayer would like to participate in joint events and giveaways with the wiki. RuneSlayer is a smaller, silver-level fansite. We don't have much of a community, but we have lots of prizes and giveaways. Over about the past year, here's a few giveaways that we have run:

Comic Drawing Competition - Gave away a signed copy of "Betrayal at Falador"
Overall Skilling Competition - Gave away one 3-month membership, and two 1-month membership cards for RuneScape
Woodcutting Competition - Gave away one 3-month RuneScape membership
Twitter/Facebook Follower Giveaway - Gave away two 1-month membership cards to a random follower on Twitter and Facebook
Current Running Logo-Design Competition - 1 year RuneScape membership up for grabs.

And we have a few more giveaways in the works that we would like RuneScape Wiki to participate in as well. Our first one includes copies of both RuneScape Books (Betrayal at Falador and Return to Canifis) signed by 12 Jagex Mods. We are looking at doing a short-story competition and giving them away as a set. This competition will run for about 3 weeks, starting around Monday.

After that, we have 5 ebook copies of Betrayal at Falador, and 5 ebook copies of Return to Canifis that we are looking at smaller guessing-game type competitions to give them away with.

Based off the fact that very few people know about the wiki events team, drawing up activity to that would help the wiki just as much as it would help RuneSlayer.

My proposal is, in short: A long-term affiliation with RuneScape Wiki, working together with said events and competitions. RuneSlayer will draft up the competitions and rules, and post them for community approval on RS Wiki. Once they're approved, we'd like to post them on RuneSlayer AND RuneScape Wiki, possibly as RuneScape:Contests or a subpage of RuneScape:Events etc. RuneSlayer's only request is that each competition page would include a link similar to "Competition run jointly with RuneSlayer".

We'd love your opinions on this, how we can improve our proposal to benefit both sites, and any other ideas you may have, and thank you for considering this. Grim reaper hood.png Ben RyfosTalk 03:20, May 8, 2011 (UTC)

Support - As Boomer said, I would like to see this happen as it would greatly help both sites out. Schmidty102 04:03, May 8, 2011 (UTC)

How many people attend/participate in your events? --Degenret01 04:45, May 8, 2011 (UTC)

That depends. Our largest ones tend to be about 30 users. That's ones like the overall skilling competition listed there, and the drop party for RuneScape's 10th birthday. Most of the time we're only around 10-ish users. Grim reaper hood.png Ben RyfosTalk 04:52, May 8, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - I'm worried by the apparent lack of activity on your fansite. You said it don't have much of a community, and the last news post on RuneSlayer was in March. I just don't see how we could benefit from an affiliation. Now, don't pounce on me, because you'll notice I left this as a comment rather than an oppose. If you can convince me, I'll support. Andrew talk 05:31, May 8, 2011 (UTC)

The affiliation appears to be only related to events and event team pages. That is a bit different than a normal affiliation....I think.--Degenret01 05:40, May 8, 2011 (UTC)
Degenret is correct, it's just for events and event team pages. We have the events, we have the prizes, we just lack the community. RS Wiki has the community, but from what I've heard, it seems that most of your community hasn't been participating in events. What we lack, you have, and vice-versa. We hope to work together to balance this, which will greatly benefit both fansites. Boomer12342 14:55, May 8, 2011 (UTC) (RuneSlayer Admin)

Support - Yes, the prizes are very nice, drawing players. As the contests are organised by RuneSlayer and not by us, we can be the fremennik warrior to lead to you; Deamonheim. Both sides will benefit from this, I hope. User_talk:Fswe1 Fswe1 Brassica Prime symbol.png 14:38, May 8, 2011 (UTC)

Sure, and it helps that you're one of the few fansites who doesn't steal our images ;) ajr 14:52, May 8, 2011 (UTC)

Support - I have no doubt at all that this will benefit both of us. They will be officially affiliated with a well known fansite, boosting their "uniques" count and community; and we will see an increase in views due to the quite generous prizes that RuneSlayer will be offering.

I have browsed their site and the content, while still developing, is of good quality and will improve further with the views that will come from an affiliation. More importantly, for those of you thinking along these lines, it is of a high enough standard/quality that we will not "tarnish" the wiki's reputation by affiliating with them.

In Ryfos' proposal, he says that they will write up the competition and will then post it here for community approval before they are started/advertised. I suggest that the ET be given the responsibility of approving or disapproving competitions for the same reasons that they were created to deal with events. - [Pharos] 15:03, May 8, 2011 (UTC)

Wait, you want the events team to be in charge of the competitions that are not in-game? ʞooɔ 21:13, May 8, 2011 (UTC)
Yes? I mean, unless you feel like letting the IFC handle it. I wouldn't mind that either. - [Pharos] iPhone Edit 21:56, May 8, 2011 (UTC)
/me holds back a laugh over the IFC. Anyway, I hate red tape as much as the next guy, but I'm a little uneasy about having the Events Team run our side of this. ʞooɔ 21:58, May 8, 2011 (UTC)
Oh... Ok, community discussions it is then... - [Pharos] iPhone Edit 22:03, May 8, 2011 (UTC)
No, no. I don't want to have idiotic, week-long discussions over trivial things. I also don't want to have some other group like the IFC to be in charge of it. My problem with putting the ET on it is that they were supported on their prowess in in-game events. This is entirely unrelated and the only reason I possibly see for doing so is that the ET is small and for the most part unilateral. We could do this very, very informally, as I really don't expect there to be any problems with this affiliation. ʞooɔ 22:08, May 8, 2011 (UTC)

Support - I do not see how this could negatively affect us. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 16:09, May 8, 2011 (UTC)

Support - It would be great to see community events of which more people know. That poll result shows we need more people to know about the ET. This affiliation might help with that. JOEYTJE50TALKpull my finger 16:17, May 8, 2011 (UTC)

Comment - RuneSlayer was looking to start the book competition yesterday. Last minute, we decided to bring this topic up to involve the wiki as well, so please excuse me if I sound like I'm rushing this. I basically have two questions for the wiki:
1. Who on the wiki would be our main contact when proposing a competition? I would much prefer a maximum of about ~5 people, for multiple reasons. Mainly, a group that would quickly comment and approve or disapprove competition ideas, but secondly, so that the competition can be 'revealed' to everyone together, as it's released. Everyone would then have the same amount of time to prepare.
2. Where would they go? Would posting to RS:Contents be acceptable?
Thanks again Grim reaper hood.png Ben RyfosTalk 10:02, May 10, 2011 (UTC)

Regarding No. 2, I think it would be better for it to go on a new section on RS:ET, I assume most readers know only of that page when it comes to events, and there isn't much reason to create a new one. Also, fergs can design some lovely banners for the competitions. 222 talk 10:15, May 10, 2011 (UTC)
If that's what you think best, sure, I'm just suggesting what someone (I believe Zamorak, maybe?) suggested to me on IRC the other day Grim reaper hood.png Ben RyfosTalk 10:25, May 10, 2011 (UTC)
I'm trying to think where else on this wiki one might find a group of five sound chaps (maybe one sound chapette) capable of running these competitions at our end. Sounds to me like there'd be considerable red tape involved in creating any such groups afresh. Ardougne cloak 4.png Raging Bull Talk 13:41, May 10, 2011 (UTC)
I suggested RuneScape:Contests because these are more like contests than the events the Event Team was set up to run. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 21:39, May 10, 2011 (UTC)

Support - Nothing bad comes from cooperation. --Aburnett(Talk) 21:42, May 10, 2011 (UTC)

I can assure you, that is not always the case. Look at the UK government at the moment What I've done Ciphrius Kane Talk 21:49, May 10, 2011 (UTC)
That isn't cooperation Ardougne cloak 4.png Raging Bull Talk 22:20, May 10, 2011 (UTC)
Bull is right. It's more like a midnight marriage between two fundamentally opposing parties. The only reason the "cooperation" is still ongoing is because both parties know that if it breaks the coalition, it would be screwed in an election. --LiquidTalk 02:24, May 11, 2011 (UTC)
...alright... --Aburnett(Talk) 02:26, May 11, 2011 (UTC)

Support - We could perhaps set up a Contest Team to liase with RuneSlayer What I've done Ciphrius Kane Talk 21:49, May 10, 2011 (UTC)

The establishment of a new team, and the selection of its' members would take a minimum of one week, and probably more like three. When there is already a team in place who has said they will handle it this would be redundant. See Cooks words about red tape.--Degenret01 00:13, May 11, 2011 (UTC)

Support - Ahgh, I nearly posted an Oppose before I checked out the RuneSlayer homepage! I think it would be a great idea for us two sites to ally, because seeing as how we are both encyclopedias (RuneSlayer may have better graphics....), and that we both kinda are based around the same stuff, I can see some benefits in the future, and I think that collaboration on articles and different matters may benefit both sites. Definitely support! Adam SavageTalk 01:26, May 11, 2011 (UTC)

Request Closure - Okay, I'm not really sure how to do this, but it's been about 3 days with no comments on this, so in an effort of trying to get the first contest started, I'm requesting this thread be closed, and that we can move on to the setup of a contests page. If no one has any objections, I would like to just post the announcement/rules and get feedback from whoever's online (at least, until the wiki decides if that is an okay method/chooses an actual method to get approval), so as to not hold up getting this started any longer. Grim reaper hood.png Ben RyfosTalk 20:32, May 13, 2011 (UTC)

Closed - RuneScape:Contests will be set up, and we will officially affiliate with RuneSlayer. ʞooɔ 20:36, May 13, 2011 (UTC)
