Forum:Admins or Sysops
With all the recent discussions over AEAE and people saying sysops have more power, etc, someone (I forgot who, I'll link if I can find, but basically-it's not my idea) suggested replacing the name admins with sysops. This would be quite an undertaking, but it might help dispel these feelings. Maybe it's a waste of time, I don't know, but I thought it was a pretty good idea, and thus I'm suggesting it.
One other thing (It is refered to as sysop by the cofounder of wikia, so to me it makes sense to be consistent with that.)
|“||I just wanted to say that becoming a sysop is *not a big deal*.
I think perhaps I'll go through semi-willy-nilly and make a bunch of people who have been around for awhile sysops. I want to dispel the aura of "authority" around the position. It's merely a technical matter that the powers given to sysops are not given out to everyone.
I don't like that there's the apparent feeling here that being granted sysop status is a really special thing.

- Formally changing "Admin" to "Sysop", within the wiki system and such... 01:33, May 10, 2010 (UTC)
Oppose - First of all, there is no "official name" for them..some people call them admins and some call them sysops. And second of all, the name change doesn't change a thing..people still know they have the same abilities, and you even referred to them as sysops when you said they have a lot of power. - The technical name is System Operator, which is shortened to sysop. From there, we use "Administrator", which is actually the "official name" per say. Therefor, I oppose this proposal. Ajraddatz Talk 02:51, May 10, 2010 (UTC)
Oppose - For semi-experienced editors, they're synonyms for each other and the occasional slip-in of sysop is fine. But people new to the Wiki concept will have no clue in hell what a "sysop" is. It's not what they'll search for and they won't be sure that's who they need for help. Sysop requests? Just isn't self-documenting, is it? Endasil (Talk) @ 02:48, May 10, 2010 (UTC)
- You do bring up a very good point. It is helpful for new members. I was just trying to think of a way to get rid of people thinking sysops are better than other users/have more of a say in discussions...because a large number of people seem to be confused about that. Oppose - Wouldn't make much of a difference. We could call them "CornDogeoneers" and they would still have the same power and be different from normal users.02:55, May 10, 2010 (UTC)
- That's not the point. The point is to try to remove this false aura that they seem to have as being better than normal users in any way. "Administrators" makes them sound like they have more power (rightfully so), but that leads to people believeing that their say is worth more and such, which is incorrect.
