Basically I think it would be very useful to be able to see the required hourly investment for using one of the money making guides in the table.

I just looked at the list and thought that enchanting onyx bolts might be a good way to make money. It currently gives ~2m profit and hour, but it requires an hourly investment of ~115m which I don't have.

Maybe make two new fields in the template called investment and return (or input_gp and output_gp), which then could be used to calculate the profit.

Discussion[edit source]

Comment - We could just total the "input" and "output" section to get that, it'd be a waste of space to add another cell for that. Suppa chuppa Talk 18:35, October 25, 2013 (UTC)

  • You can't actually do that as they are entered as text. Prayer-icon.pngTyiloTalkQuest.png 18:38, October 25, 2013 (UTC)
Well, clearly not the way we have it done now. But that's not what I was saying. Suppa chuppa Talk 18:41, October 25, 2013 (UTC)

If we did this we'd probably want the Output header and Input header to say Output (115,000,000) and Input (117,000,000), or whatever the values are. That's preferable to adding an entirely new cell. However, calculating the values and calling all the prices an extra time is not really an option in terms of performance. So we'd have to scrap the Profit parameter entirely, have InputValue and OutputValue parameters that would separate the two components of profit (and could be used in the way you're suggesting), and then where the Profit cell currently sits we would instead calculate OutputValue - InputValue. That would result in the same number of {{GEP}} calls. I don't really see much benefit as it's not hard to add up all the inputs mentally to get an idea of the required hourly investment. If you wanted to do all the work for this I wouldn't really be opposed, but it would be difficult to seamlessly transition from using {{{Profit}}} for the profit, to {{{OutputValue}}} - {{{InputValue}}}. ʞooɔ 18:47, October 25, 2013 (UTC)

Wouldn't splitting it into two parameters greatly hinder the speed of the main money making page? It's already slow as it is, wouldn't adding 150+ includes just deal a bigger blow? MolMan 17:03, October 26, 2013 (UTC)

I don't see the benefit being all that great, and I only see the parameter being as vital as your example in a small number of guides. I'm not saying it's useless information, but I'm not sure it's worth it. There's also the problem of one time inputs or varying options. How could it possibly handle requirements such as armour and weapons? Or are those one-off investments not relevant to your idea? Also, what Cook said about performance. Closed - This hasn't been implemented currently. I still have questions about how well that would work and what the overall benefit is, and if we changed it would require a multi-step process to preserve the page during the change. Judging by the lack of comments I would say this doesn't need consensus in the future, and if you want to do it just leave me a talk page message and we can discuss what would need to happen. ʞooɔ 23:22, November 16, 2013 (UTC)
