Hi guys. Often when I am trying to find an obscure character in-game (For clues, etc), I'll have to look up where the character is. Descriptions on the character pages here are well and good, but I think also adding a small section of minimap of the general area the character can be found would be extremely helpful. I realize this would probably be a huge project, but doing so would certainly increase the quality and usability of the character pages. This would not apply to common or duplicate characters, such as bankers. Thoughts?

Placement options

  • Cook Me Plox has graciously set up the existing character infobox with the possible added map perameter here. This seems like it would be the easiest way to go about doing this, but feel free to suggest other possiblities.
  • Another possibility would be to place the images below a header somewhere in the article.

Image formatting options

  • Place a small dot on the map section indicating the character's location.
  • Use a small circle encompassing the general roaming area of the character (see here).

Comment - I don't mind, but we're going to have to come up with some ground rules for what gets shown. This is especially true since some NPC's (like Banker) appear simultaneously in multiple locations, while others (like Glough) change their locations. --LiquidTalk 15:58, November 20, 2010 (UTC)

I completely agree. I was more referring to unique characters. Like with your banker example, I think it's a pretty safe assumption that everyone knows how to find a banker.—Triforce 14 16:51, November 20, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - It'd be hard for some NPCs, as Liquid said, and we'd need to put more images on each page; while this isn't a problem for, say, Weird Old Man, it is a problem for the more dense pages, like the Corp or Glough. Putting a screenshot of each and every NPC's location is going to take a while, and would require something like 2500 new images. Real Crazy 16:06, November 20, 2010 (UTC)

I didn't have in mind doing this for enemy NPCs like the corp (I don't think corp is even an NPC?), and for characters that appear multiple places, for example, during quests, we could simply identify their location after the quest is over.—Triforce 14 16:46, November 20, 2010 (UTC)
All monsters, bosses, people, etc, that aren't a player/controlled by a player are NPCs. NPC is non-player character, so actually, the Corp is an NPC. As for quest NPCs, not all players have actually done the quest, so we would need to do both images. Real Crazy 12:04, November 21, 2010 (UTC)
Okay, in that case, I didn't plan on this affecting monsters. —Triforce 1420:49, November 21, 2010 (UTC)

Sure Let RS:UCS to not add banker. FOr guys like Glough, okay, we need two or 3 pics I think. But it seems very worthwhile.--Degenret01 16:25, November 20, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - For NPCs like banker, there could be a special gallery or slideshow of bank locations. And what does "enemy pages" mean? --中亚人/中亞人 (Chinasian/Jeffwang16) 跟我谈话 18:55, November 20, 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, by that I meant monster pages. I was confused since Real Not Pure mentioned the Corp Beast.—Triforce 14 19:24, November 20, 2010 (UTC)
Why? No reason to. --中亚人/中亞人 (Chinasian/Jeffwang16) 跟我谈话 20:02, November 20, 2010 (UTC)

Support - So long as it's for people like Shiratti the Custodian and not, say, Goblin or Drunken Dwarf. Also, we'd probably want to have a format for it so it's not all mismatched. ʞooɔ 20:19, November 20, 2010 (UTC)

Support - But we will need some rules anyway, and, if this passes, you can open a WikiGuild for this. Matt (t) 21:00, November 20, 2010 (UTC)

Support - A mammoth task, yes; but it will improve the quality and helpfulness of our articles by making it much easier to locate specific NPC's. After all, a picture tells a thousand words. 222 talk 00:30, November 21, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Big task but will be worth it. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 00:40, November 21, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - We'd need to figure out exactly where on the page we would have the image. I made a prototype for a new {{Infobox Monster}} here. ʞooɔ 11:30, November 21, 2010 (UTC)

Awesome! That's almost exactly what I had in mind. —Triforce 14

Oppose - If you're not adding bank locations, then no. --中亚人/中亞人 (Chinasian/Jeffwang16) 跟我谈话 13:48, November 21, 2010 (UTC)

We can have a link to the bank articles for the locations of bankers. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 14:47, November 21, 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, but that's not what the nom had in mind. --中亚人/中亞人 (Chinasian/Jeffwang16) 跟我谈话 14:59, November 21, 2010 (UTC)
The nom even said that they had in mind more unique characters, and bankers are not unique. svco4bY.png3Gf5N2F.png 15:06, November 21, 2010 (UTC)
What do you mean by that, Jeff? We already have a List of bank locations, there's no reason to destroy the Banker page with 70 maps of where the banker is. It's just not feasible. ʞooɔ 20:33, November 21, 2010 (UTC)
Oh... didn't know that... --中亚人/中亞人 (Chinasian/Jeffwang16) 跟我谈话 03:38, November 23, 2010 (UTC)
Wherever we decide to place the images, we could certainly just place a link to that page there instead. —Triforce 1413:57, November 23, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Would really help in locating important NPCs, and an image can do better than words for describing a location What I've done Ciphrius Kane Talk 21:18, November 21, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - We should also decide exactly how we want to format these maps. Can we get some examples/proposals? ʞooɔ 00:56, November 22, 2010 (UTC)

I for one like the modification to the infobox you made. —Triforce 1418:19, November 22, 2010 (UTC)
Not just where we put them but how exactly we make the pictures. Do we want to just put a dot where the NPC is? Give it a large roaming area like we have for Dalal? ʞooɔ 18:28, November 22, 2010 (UTC)
I think giving them a small roaming area, where appropriate, would be the best plan. I think as long as players have a general visual of where they're located it will help.—Triforce 1419:01, November 22, 2010 (UTC)
Roaming area sounds good. PS, I'm changing to Support, as when I opposed, I thought you wanted the close-up view, taken from the game screen, not a minimap view! *Hits self with a hammer* Real Crazy 20:02, November 22, 2010 (UTC)

Support - I think roaming area is best - it probably stands out more than a dot and will be enough to get to the location and find the NPC.
I should also point out that the NPCs in question are likely using {{Infobox non-player character}} rather than {{Infobox Monster}}, so thats where the difference would be in terms of where it's used. In any case, a "Mapimage = No" option could be included for those where it's not feasible. --Henneyj 23:13, November 25, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Never a bad day to add more useful information to the wiki. I tend to oppose the idea of adding the location image to the Infobox for the following reasons. 1) It makes an already large section even larger. 2) The infobox is not supposed to contain every bit of information of the page. 3) The map itself will often require some sort of explanation, making it an irrational addition to an infobox. As for the mark showing where the NPC is, I would simply walk to his/her general location then take a screenshot of the area on the world map. In theory, the "You Are Here" arrows would get the point across. Otherwise, people will likely resort to Microsoft Paint to create the mark, which always ends in inconsistency and incredibly poor editing. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 03:15, November 26, 2010 (UTC)

Where do you suppose we should put the map? There's nowhere else we can put it that fits in. ʞooɔ 04:12, November 26, 2010 (UTC)
It would have to be a standalone image, then. I don't see that as a problem. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 03:43, November 28, 2010 (UTC)
How does a standalone image beneath the infobox improve over having it in the infobox? As far as I'm concerned including it in the infobx ensures a consistent placing of the image on each NPC page. --Henneyj 05:58, November 28, 2010 (UTC)

Support - I was about to suggest the infobox, but did a CTRL + F for "infobo" (not a typo) to avoid looking like an idiot when I suggest it. Yep, it was a good idea. Also, I support the infobox idea. Truth of the manner is, I have that problem too.  —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Porp1 (talk).

Closed - We will add a map on the bottom of infoboxes. A new category, NPC maps, has been created for these maps. A new parameter, map, will be made, and it will be similar to image, but on the bottom of the infobox. If making these, please make them under 220 pixels wide, and use a roaming area if possible. ʞooɔ 23:09, December 4, 2010 (UTC)
