Our sidebar currently links to RS:DISCORD under the "Community" section, but this is easy to miss and requires jumping through more hoops just to get to our Discord server.

I think we should implement a Discord link positioned at the top of the sidebar (using one of Discord's native image-based widgets which updates the online count). The advantages of this that I see are:

  • More visibility - Our Discord server is used extensively by our community, including for project planning and RS:OSWF, so by having something that is more obvious which you can click on, it will hopefully recruit more people to our server.
  • Retains consistency with other sites - Similar widgets, especially the native one we're using, are used on other websites and platforms, so the link is an obvious clickthrough to Discord.
  • Spices up the sidebar - Currently the sidebar could do with a splash of something different/some colour. There are a lot of links, but they all look the same.
  • Looks good in both light and dark mode - The colour of the link/button works with both colour schemes without changes.

Here's my mockup (ignore that 'About us' is missing, I used that to implement this). It's a pure CSS solution, so no additional JS will be loaded for this.

The code for testing this (will replace the 'About us' link - when we do this for real, we'll have a "fake" link for Discord at the top of the sidebar which we'll override with the following rules):

#n-About-us {
    margin-bottom: 1em;
}

#n-About-us a {
    color: transparent;
    background: url("https://discordapp.com/api/guilds/177206626514632704/embed.png?style=shield") no-repeat;
    height: 20px;
    display: block;
}

I'm sure we can make small adaptations to this if need be to fit properly.

I think this is a good idea to get more people involved in our server, and is better than the less obvious 'Discord server' link in the sidebar which doesn't currently even link to the server directly.

After thinking about it, I like Riblet's design below more. It works for people who don't recognize the discord logo, which could be a large amount of casual players, and it looks nice on the OSRS wiki. ɳex undique 17:59, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

Support but not how the mockup currently looks. The native Discord widget can't be customized for light and dark modes (not ideal) and doesn't match our Creative Commons and Weird Gloop footer badges, and the online user count is not useful because it's presumably never going to be real-time. I prefer this placed at the bottom of the sidebar: Iiii I I I 04:24, 10 April 2020 (UTC)

Support this position and design. I especially like the larger size of the button and icon. Riblet15 (talk) 04:30, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
I prefer the original proposal's position and content. Putting it at the bottom will significantly reduce the number of people who see it (since it will be below the fold on a lot of pageviews). The online user count, while not literally real time, conveys information about the size of the currently active community, and in my view provides a much stronger pull to join. I'm quite sure that if we a/b tested this, the "top of sidebar, showing user count" quadrant would refer the most users by a landslide. ʞooɔ 05:37, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
The native widget can’t be customised for light and dark mode, you’re right, but it’s clear that it works in both so we have no need to change it. Also, I don’t really see a need to match badges that are in our footer, right at the bottom of the page, that many people will glance over. They are two different types of badge, used for different purposes. The online count won’t be in complete real-time, but will still update often and I agree with Cook, conveying how big our community is will help draw people into the Discord. I also dislike putting it at the bottom of our sidebar, as you’re drastically reducing the visibility by doing that. The sidebar is long and it won’t be seen on smaller viewports. We want to make our server as visible as we can without disrupting the flow of our page, I feel like the native widget achieves this well without any changes. Not everything has to be custom designed - it just creates more work and won’t allow us to use the online count for example. jayden 10:05, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
The top left corner is where readers' eyes typically start when scanning a page. Getting new users to join our server is not a hugely pressing or significant problem, it's not like we're bleeding users -- a Discord button does not deserve such a prominent location. There is also no @2x version of the image, or at least you haven't linked to one. And since I've already done the work (see above), "creates more work" is a strange argument against it. This is a nice button, but I prefer seeing the number of people online (+ points cook mentioned above about it not being exactly real time). Additionally, I don't think it should go at the bottom where it would obviously be much less visible. I also do not see why it should have to match the footer buttons Star Talk ayy lmao ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) 16:43, 11 April 2020 (UTC)
Support - I like this too! Meeeeerds msg 02:39, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

Support Jayden's original idea - when it's about visibility and creating connections, it helps if the button is always visible, not just after scrolling down. Support-ish - I'm not too thrilled about the design of the button. You'd have to know that's the discord logo (it took me a second to recognize it and I have discord open, I'd imagine a lot of others will not recognize that it's for a chat). I would be happier if the button said something like "Chat with us on Discord" --LiquidTalk 16:01, 10 April 2020 (UTC)

Comment - I find myself agreeing with Liquid. The proposed design is just an icon and a number and not really anything that calls readers to join our community. I support the idea of giving users a better way to sign up, but I'm not sure this design is the best we can do. cqm talk 20:06, 10 April 2020 (UTC)

Alternate design - (Previously posted on osw) - I find the current design unacceptable on retina displays, compare normal (top) with retina (bottom, blurry):

Since the image is in the most prominent visible location on the entire page, it should match the high standards of design that Steve, myself and others have spent so much time perfecting. Steve proposed a custom button that allows us to serve a high-resolution image with a bigger icon and text description:

Despite losing the active viewer count, this button solves a lot of the usability concerns in the current design. The original discord icon, especially when blurry, is so small to be nearly unrecognizable. The "X online" text gives no indication to someone unfamiliar with Discord that the button is a link to an external chat app. The new button will appear sharp on all displays, has a large icon, and includes unambiguous text with obvious Discord branding. Riblet15 (talk) 04:13, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

Support-Alternate Design The new logo design looks much more clear and solves some of the issues brought up of not being clear what it is for- I also think having something inviting like "chat on discord" is more welcoming than just a number next to it, which is not even clear what it refers to. Would love to see this implemented! Parrc (talk) 07:05, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

Support - My answer will probably not help but I like Jayden and Riblet's buttons it goes without saying that a button will be awesome for the Wiki. My only suggestion is that we add crabby in there somehow (long live Crabby). Talk to me ShaunyMy contributions 12:39, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

Support Iiii I I I's "Chat on Discord" button - (Placement: top left) If text is being used instead of user count, "chat" is more descriptive than "join" which could refer to anything. I'm not opposed to showing user count, and I wish we could show both text and user count, but that would take too much space, so I'm choosing this one, which I think would be noticed by both Discord users and others seeking to resolve doubts. For the time being, I'm okay with adding any of the buttons until thread closure - Habblet (talk) 13:19, 16 April 2020 (UTC)

Support button bottom-left - There's no need to make Discord the centre of attention on every page, it can be quite distractive. Also do not care for displaying the number of users online, that reminds me of a wikia thing.
