Forum:Add Policies to the Sidebar
To keep this short and sweet: Add a "Policies" tab to our sidebar, and when you click on it you go to Category:Policies and when you hover over it, you see the list of all our policies without the "RuneScape" prefix. This will be great for new users and IPs as they can now easily see the rules of the wiki. Maybe we should call it "Rules of the Wiki (Policies)" as to be more direct.
Comment - I don't know if you could add the category and remove the RuneScape prefix. See [[w:c:help:Help:Sidebar|Sidebar]].17:06, October 21, 2009 (UTC)
- You can, my sidebar links to the category and it displays as Policies. As others has said tho, we should probably create a page to direct people to the policies, this would make each policy more accessible to new users who may not know exactly what their looking for. --Aburnett (Talk) 23:41, October 21, 2009 (UTC)
Support, as a page, not category - This highlights a concern I have with having our policies only found in a category and not a page like "RuneScape:Policies". Anyone can add a policy tag to any essay, user page, or other tirade and it's more difficult for us to track down when something was added (or worse, removed) without community consensus. Having it on a page would allow for better tracking of policy implementation by looking at the page history. Categories don't have any easy tool like that. This way we can have a page that's heavily watched and is the single go to place for our official policy.19:08, October 21, 2009 (UTC)
Support link - Sounds good to me, as the policies could be found easily. Also, the page idea sounds like a better idea than the category idea, per Tollerach's reasons. ~MuzTalk 20:40, October 21, 2009 (UTC)
Support - Any sort of easy access to the list of policies would be great. When I joined the wiki a couple years ago, I had no idea what the policies were or where I could find them. This would be extremely useful for new users.21:11, October 21, 2009 (UTC)
Support - I added a link to them to my custom sidebar long ago. Its great to have at hand and it might even get some new editors to take a peak at them, avoiding issues later. --Aburnett (Talk) 23:41, October 21, 2009 (UTC)
Check out RuneScape:Policies - I took a crack at making a page that lists all our policies and gives brief summaries (nutshells) of their contents. This page would allow us to have a central and easily maintained list of our policies. Personally, I think it's better than just a category page. This page is still in the draft phase so feel free to improve the formatting or clarify any confusion. Even though the clan chat discussion page is in the policy category, I moved it to the end of the page, since this didn't seem like an actual policy to me (we could remove it altogether too). Also, I was wondering if we should remove Earthere's essay from that category since its tone seems to conflict with RS:UTP. Anyway, I hope this page is helpful. 20:52, October 22, 2009 (UTC)
- It looks like a good start. I slightly reworded the header and also broke the policies into a few different sections. It seemed to me that the whole list was a little overwhelming and messy, especially for a new user who may not know where to start. because of this, I broke the page into User policies, Page and File polices, and Community policies sections. I don't know if this is the best way to break it up, or if people even want to break it up, so feel free to adjust it as you see fit. --Aburnett (Talk) 23:01, October 22, 2009 (UTC)
