By default, {{NPC map}}s display locations as blue squares. This results in some questionably useful results when multiple locations are added e.g. Portmaster Kags, Nex Gower Quest and if different NPC versions each have their own maps without adding |group=1, |group=2 e.t.c., you end up with a lots of squares that are overlapping if the NPCs are near to each other.

I propose changing the default map type of {{NPC map}} from square to pin. Maps for NPCs that wander can be given additional parameters to use square instead.

Support - While the idea was probably to imply that some NPCs can wander a bit and not be in that exact spot, it's not really useful as it doesn't represent actual wander area, obfuscates the actual spot for stationary NPCs and just adds an unnecessary step of having to click the "show exact spawns" link. The idea of whether NPC is wandering or stationary isn't even included on the pages in any capacity and should be represented in another manner, probably a new parameter and/or some variant of the map pin. I've added some example of current and proposed maps, including problematic ones and some I chose randomly. This is just changing the template from {{NPC map}} to {{Map}} with mtype=pin. To slightly amend my proposal, I would like either of square or pin to be the default and the other to be available as an alternative via parameters. I've not quite worked out which option would be preferable, probably depending on how common stationary NPCs vs wandering NPCs there are. Robert571 (talk) 14:52, 23 October 2021 (UTC)

Conditional Support - Love this idea for stationary NPCs, or for ones where they're only going to be in one building area such as Hetty or Sani Piliu. It's sort of obvious (apart from Hetty, does she leave her house?) that they're going to be in this one area. For NPCs that roam, I would like for us to be able to acknowledge their roaming area, whether with a square or another shape. As for what we use as the default; I'm not sure I have a stance at the moment... Comment - Turns out {{NPC map}} does have a param for using pins |type = pins instead of what I had tried: {{Map}}'s |mtype = pin. Robert571 (talk) 12:18, 18 November 2021 (UTC)

Closed - NPC maps can be updated to use pins instead of squares at the editor's disgression, and no further edits to the template are required for this.
