There is a section on the main page with the same title, however, I find it useless. The only thing we use it for consistently is updating people regarding who has become a Sysop, which need not be documented on the main page. All other updates (and every important update) are expressed through the Sitenotice, which is no longer available with the release of the new skin. To solve both problems, I am proposing that Template:News be replaced by [[MediaWiki:Community-messages]] with onlyinclude brackets around the actual content. Additionally, because the preferential location of the Sitenotice can no longer be used, I would like to move the whole thing up a few sections on the main page. In my opinion, it should appear below the contents section and above the featured article as to not overshadow actual content, but still be noticeable when you first visit the page.

Support - As nom. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 14:07, October 30, 2010 (UTC)

Question - Is there anyway to put it on recentchanges or something? Because I'm fairly sure many people don't check the mainpage. I know that I don't. bad_fetustalk 14:10, October 30, 2010 (UTC)

Only by using [[MediaWiki:Community-corner]] or MediaWiki:recentchangestext. The Community-corner has been used for {{News}} in the past, so consensus is not required for it to be implemented there. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 14:54, October 30, 2010 (UTC)

Support - Per Stelercus - I was also actually thinking about the usefullness of adding a list of the more interesting/influential yg threads + sysoppings + other news to each edition of the Wiki post. But after 2 months its kind of old news :S - [Pharos] iPhone Edit 14:36, October 30, 2010 (UTC)

Weak support - I do like the idea, though I think it's nice if we have something related to community on the main page. Right now, or featured editor and news boxes are way at the bottom. However, I suppose this change is better than nothing. --LiquidTalk 15:12, October 30, 2010 (UTC)

Honestly, the Sitenotice is more community oriented than the Wiki News section. Magic-icon.pngStelercusIlluminated Book of Balance.png 15:20, October 30, 2010 (UTC)

Comment - When I had posted Community-messages, it was the most current information on what would replace the sitenotice. However since then Commmunity-corner has been issued with the Notification bubble. I had already explained this at the administrator requests project page. The previous use was for MyHome which is now WikiActivity. Updating Community-corner results in a 48 hour window for the notification to be in use, that is it will appear once the corner is updated and disappears 48 hours later. Support - This is much more useful since the news goes all the way back to July and tomorrow will be November, that's 5 months of stuff that almost no one would take notice of or care about. Hunter cape (t).png Sentra246Blue hallowe'en mask.png 22:25, October 30, 2010 (UTC)

Question - What was it going to be used for in the first place? Seijana 21:44, October 31, 2010 (UTC)

Support - All that's ever on there nowadays is "X has been sysopped by Y" or "The wiki's 9001st article has been created". Real Nub 13:03, November 7, 2010 (UTC)

Support - I think the community messages qualifies as news more than the current system, so it's definitely an improvement. Farming cape (t).png Lil cloud 9 Talk 23:47, November 10, 2010 (UTC)
