Dismember is a basic Strength ability. It requires level 14 Strength to use. When activated, the player inflicts a bleed upon their opponent, doing 5 equal hits, dealing total of up to 188% ability damage over 6 seconds. The minimum (total) hit of this ability is 100% weapon damage. Each individual hit is rounded down. Dismember is one of five bleeds for the Attack and Strength skills, the others being Lesser Dismember, Slaughter, Blood Tendrils, and Massacre.
Players without level 14 Attack have access to Lesser Dismember instead, which automatically upgrades to Dismember upon reaching level 14 Attack.
Unlike normal abilities, damage over time effects are not affected by:
- Damage boosting prayers and ancient curses (aside from their accuracy bonus)
- Damage boosting abilities: Berserk, Death's Swiftness, and Sunshine (with the exception of Metamorphosis)
- Zaros Godsword's special attack
- Berserker's Fury relic power
- Most invention perks affecting variable damage, including Genocidal, Precise, Equilibrium, and Ruthless
- Some items from the slayer (effect) groups, including: tuned Bane equipment, Salve amulet (e), Demon slayer equipment, Darklight
- Critical hits
- Slayer helmet and its variants
Damage over time effects are only affected by some modifiers, including:
- Damage bonus from equipment
- Visible combat skill boosts, from potions or other sources
- Vulnerability or its lesser form, Curse
- Berserker, Reckless, and Maniacal auras - however, while inside the effects of Berserk, Death's Swiftness, or Sunshine, the aura's invisible boost is negated
- Mahjarrat and Dark magic auras - regardless of being inside the effects of Berserk, Death's Swiftness, or Sunshine
- Among the Dragon slayer, Demon slayer, and Undead slayer effect groups, only the slayer invention perks and slayer abilities affect bleeds
- Scrimshaws
- Icy Precision effect granted by Wen arrows
This may make it less desirable in some situations, but due to its higher-than-normal minimum hit, it is still one of the higher-damage abilities on average. However, Dismember also has an abnormally high chance of hitting its minimum damage, which makes its average ability damage 120.6% (compare to Sever or Decimate, which both have an average ability damage of 112.8% and are affected by the above boosts).
The Lunging perk increases the maximum damage of this ability over 5 ticks by 20% per rank. The Masterwork Spear of Annihilation special effect extends Dismember by 2 hits to a total of 7 hits. The Strength cape's perk extends Dismember by 3 hits to a total of 8 hits. All ability modifiers stack with each other.
