Crystal hatchet detail.png

The crystal hatchet is the most powerful hatchet available. Level 70 Attack is required to wield it, unless switched to a tool-only variant by right-clicking and swapping it, and level 71 Woodcutting to chop with it, although 75 Woodcutting is indirectly needed to complete Plague's End and thus to have access to Prifddinas to create the hatchet. It chops roughly 15% faster than the dragon hatchet.

It can be obtained by trading in a dragon hatchet, from either the inventory or the tool belt, and 4,000 harmonic dust to Lady Ithell, in the Ithell Clan district of Prifddinas.

The crystal hatchet can be added to the tool belt, and does not degrade like other crystal items. It features an improved woodcutting speed compared to a dragon hatchet and players using it have twice the chance to gain Shattered Heart and golden Shattered Heart rocks. Players may convert their crystal hatchet back to a dragon hatchet by speaking to Lady Ithell; however, they will not be given back the harmonic dust previously used to upgrade the tool.

Players who wish to augment a crystal hatchet already on their tool belt may speak with Doc, who will remove it from the tool belt. He will only perform this service once.

Combat stats[edit | edit source]

Special attack[edit | edit source]

The dragon hatchet's special attack, Clobber

The crystal hatchet has a special attack, Clobber (identical to the dragon hatchet special attack), which requires 30% adrenaline. The attack hits for 50-150% ability damage. Upon successful hit, the special attack applies a debuff that raises the affinity of the target by 3 and decreases the target's Magic damage dealt by 10% for one minute. The special attack also lowers the Defence and Magic level by 5% rounded down on targets with level 20 or more Defence/Magic.

Development history[edit | edit source]

Crystal axe (The Eyes of Glouphrie).png
The version of the axe intended for release with The Eyes of Glouphrie.

The crystal axe (as hatchets were called at the time) was originally intended to release in 2006 as a reward from the The Eyes of Glouphrie quest. For unknown reasons, it was cut before release, leaving the crystal saw to be the reward instead. Despite this, its models and sound effects remained unused in the game files for a time, before eventually being deleted. The exact mechanics of how this version of the axe was intended to function are unknown, although the name of one of the sound effects associated with it indicates it would use charges like other crystal equipment.

A crystal hatchet would finally see a release in 2014 alongside the second batch of Prifddinas.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Given a rate of 600 dust per hour at the harps, obtaining the crystal hatchet is worth it if you would spend 51 hours or more chopping trees normally. It is also worth considering that in earning the 4,000 harmonic dust, players earn between 320,000 and 384,000 experience in Crafting.
