Cowhide detail.png

Cowhides are dropped by cows when they are killed. If it is brought to a tanner, it can be turned into soft leather for free or hard leather for three coins. Cowhides are used in Creature Creation to create unicows. Completion of Tower of Life is a requirement for accessing Creature Creation.

The best place for free-to-play players to kill cows for cowhides is the field north-west of Lumbridge because players may deposit their cowhides and raw beef they obtained with Beefy Bill, who charges a 10% commission. On the downside, cows are more scattered compared to the cow field east of Lumbridge Castle.

Killing cows can often be beneficial for low-level free players as the cowhides and raw beef obtained can be sold for a decent profit. It also grants combat experience, making it an activity worthy of a new player's time and effort.

The hides can be taken to a tanner (found in Al Kharid, the Ranging Guild, Varrock, Taverley, Canifis, and the Crafting Guild) in order to turn it into either soft leather for free or hard leather for three coins per piece, which can then be turned into leather equipment using the Crafting skill. This can be a good money making method for low level players as hard leather sells for -158 coins more than a cowhide. Alternately, as soft leather can be created for free, a player can make 156 coins instead. Although it may take more time to tan the hides, the Al Kharid bank is near the Al Kharid tanner and so it is relatively easy to tan hides. There is also a tannery south of Varrock's west bank.
