Corruption Blast is a Magic basic ability, unlockable through Raids from either the untradeable Corruption Blast ability codex or the tradeable Mazcab ability codex. It is one of three damage over time abilities for the Magic skill, the others being Lesser Combust and Combust. Of the three, it is the only one not classified as a burn.

Mechanics[edit | edit source]

The first hit of Corruption Blast applies a debuff to the target and deals anywhere from 33–100% ability damage. Each subsequent hit will deal less damage, decreasing by 20% of the initial hit. For example, if the initial hit is 1,080, the five damage-over-time hits will be: 1080, 864, 648, 432, and 216. This means that the ability does 100–300% ability damage over five hits. In player-versus-monster situations, each hit will spread to all adjacent targets in a 3x3 area. In player-versus-player, hits will only spread to other players actively in combat with the caster, and only in multi-combat areas.

In all situations, each hit will damage every target for the same base damage; e.g. if the initial hit on a target A is 1,080, the first hit when it spreads to a target B will be 864 (which is the second hit on A); the next hit on B will be 648 (which is the third hit on A). In total, B will take 4 hits. This is true in player-versus-player situations as well; however, hits may differ between targets because of damage reduction from armour and defence levels. The corruption can never spread back to a target that already had it.

Unlike normal abilities, damage over time effects are not affected by:
Damage boosting prayers and ancient curses (aside from their accuracy bonus)
Damage boosting abilities: Berserk, Death's Swiftness, and Sunshine (with the exception of Metamorphosis)
Zaros Godsword's special attack
Berserker's Fury relic power
Most invention perks affecting variable damage, including Genocidal, Precise, Equilibrium, and Ruthless
Some items from the slayer (effect) groups, including: tuned Bane equipment, Salve amulet (e), Demon slayer equipment, Darklight
Critical hits
Slayer helmet and its variants
Damage over time effects are only affected by some modifiers, including:
Damage bonus from equipment
Visible combat skill boosts, from potions or other sources
Vulnerability or its lesser form, Curse
Berserker, Reckless, and Maniacal auras - however, while inside the effects of Berserk, Death's Swiftness, or Sunshine, the aura's invisible boost is negated
Mahjarrat and Dark magic auras - regardless of being inside the effects of Berserk, Death's Swiftness, or Sunshine
Among the Dragon slayer, Demon slayer, and Undead slayer effect groups, only the slayer invention perks and slayer abilities affect bleeds
Icy Precision effect granted by Wen arrows

Use with other abilities[edit | edit source]

Corruption Blast shares its cooldown timer with Corruption Shot. The corruption can be used together with other damage over time abilities without overriding their effects, including Corruption Shot. If the corruption spreads to a monster that is not in combat, they will endure damage over time without targeting the player who used it (assuming the monster is unaggressive). This makes it extremely effective in crowded areas like the Heart of Gielinor, as the corruption will spread to progressively more targets, while only your first target retaliates. The corruption effect cannot spread from a player to a monster, or vice versa.

While the corruption effect does not usually make a non-targeted monster aggressive, some monsters, notably the automatons found in Guthix's Cave, will begin their countdown timer to use their special attack move. Additionally, monsters with phases such as rune dragons can become aggressive if enough health is lost from corruption that they enter the next phase. If a non-aggressive monster spreads its corruption effect to an elite monster of the same kind, the latter does not become aggressive.

Fever spiders will become aggressive if hit by the corruption effect, regardless of if they were the targeted monster.

Freedom can be used to clear the corruption effect; however, it will still have a brief moment to spread. If targets are still adjacent to the player who used freedom when the attack is cleared, it can spread to applicable targets. If the attack is cleared before it can spread, the corruption will not move to any other targets.
