A player bursting a corrupted scarab

Corrupted Scarabs may occasionally spawn around every Shifting Tombs entrances within Menaphos, and periodically outside the Sophanem Slayer Dungeon. They may also be found in treasure chests within Shifting Tombs. They may be burst to gain small amount of reputation and Slayer experience. Bursting also deals damage to the player based on their Constitution level.

Scarabs will spawn randomly every 60-120 minutes after previous spawn time of that world. Scarabs remain active for 5 minutes at all four Shifting Tombs entrances, at the sandstone mine in the Worker district, and outside the Sophanem Slayer Dungeon simultaneously. When scarabs spawn in a world, there is a game message: Agitated scarabs have burrowed up onto the surface and are spreading corruption!

Strategies[edit | edit source]

To easily find spawns, players can use friends chats.

A player multi-stomping the same scarab 4 times

It is possible to burst the same scarab multiple times, and up to four times by two-ticking. The option to 'burst' a scarab will remain available for 6 ticks (3.6 seconds) after first clicking to burst it, while the burst animation begins, and can be used again during this time. 2x game-ticks (1.2 seconds) must elapse between each burst/stomp; additional bursts within this timeframe only incur damage. You can burst the same scarab 3-4 times before moving onto the next one. The action/rewards will follow through even if the scarab has disappeared.

Placing food items on the action bar allows the player to eat to heal without interrupting the burst animation. Eating food after the character's stomp animation starts will cancel the animation positioning, allowing player to better position themselves for the next scarab. A common sequence for a singular scarab is Burst -> Eat -> Burst -> Burst-> Burst -> Eat, cancelling the last stomp animation positional lock, allowing character to move.

Player may reset an active swarm by re-entering the area, the quickest way to do this is to use Shifting Tomb entrances' right-click option to travel to another district. Skipping loading screen by turning off 'Loading Screen' option within graphic settings may be preferable to the player for faster zoning.

Experience[edit | edit source]

The experience and reputation gained from the Scarabs decreases with the amount of scarabs squashed. After experience and reputation is halved for the day, the percentage of base experience/reputation gained decreases further for every 12 scarabs up to a total of 60 scarabs. The decrease in rates resets at 00:00 UTC. The base experience seems to be the experience that would be given by a small XP lamp divided by 5. Experience gained is affected by experience boosts.

Squishing 60 scarabs a day gives 36.16 times the amount of base experience and reputation earned. Achieving a minimum of 14/15% experience boost daily through a mix of boosts: Advanced pulse core, Wise perk, Clan Avatar and Premier Club 10% experience boost, allows players with 99 Slayer to earn a minimum of 2,000 base experience per scarab for a total of at least 72,320 Slayer experience per day.

A player may average 70-90 'bursts' per spawn window, more with food and familiar. With level 99 Slayer at lowest depreciation of 20%, still resulting in roughly 37,600 Slayer XP per 5 minutes or 451,200 Slayer XP per hour. The coins in addition makes it a lucrative activities for lower level players and early ironmen, paying out at average 1,232 coins per burst, or roughly 1,400,000 coins per hour.

Amount of scarabs slain Base Reputation Percentage of base experience/reputation
1 to 23 50 100%
24 to 35 25 50%
36 to 47 16.5 33%
48 to 59 12.5 25%
60+ 10 20%
