The chest of souls is a chest found in the Sunken Pyramid. Placing the filled ushabti in either the chest of souls or in a room of the player-owned Slayer dungeon counts as registering the monster in the Slayer Codex.

Souls placed into the chest are not reclaimable and therefore not usable within the player-owned slayer dungeon. There is also no warning before placing souls into the chest.

Attempting to add a soul to the chest without having a filled ushabti in the inventory gives the message: You need the soul of a Slayer monster stored inside an ushabti to store a soul here.
