Purchasing a cape of accomplishment

A Cape of Accomplishment (more commonly known as a skillcape amongst players) is a cape that symbolises achieving Skill mastery (level 99) in a particular skill, or the completion of every quest. Each skill, in addition to the cape for quests, has its own distinct cape of accomplishment. Each cape also comes with a matching hood, although the hoods do not offer any bonuses. It is possible to combine the hood with the cape to change the cape's appearance; the cape will show the hood down when worn.

Capes of Accomplishment are obtainable, when the requirements are met, by buying them from specific skill masters, who may be seen proudly displaying the cape that they sell. They cost 99,000 coins each or 92,000 coins if wearing an activated Ring of Charos, regardless of the type of cape being bought (e.g. trimmed/untrimmed). A temporary skill boost that raises a skill level to 99 will not allow the player to obtain the corresponding cape. The skill master is located in a place related to their skill. These capes can only be bought and equipped on a members' world, but once equipped they may be worn on non-member worlds—the equipment bonuses will not apply but the emotes of capes can still be performed.

When a player only has one skill at level 99, the "trim" of the cape—the bands of material around the edge of the cape—will be the same colour as the rest of the cape. However, once a player achieves a second level 99 skill, all of their skill capes of achievement (including any earlier obtained capes) will receive a graphical enhancement in the form of a trim of a different colour. This is irreversible. This process does not apply to the Quest Cape: this cape cannot be visually trimmed, nor can it be used to trim other capes of accomplishment. These so-called "trimmed skillcapes" can be used to identify that someone has more than one skillcape. For this reason, the process of getting a second level 99 skill is sometimes referred to as "trimming" a cape.

Players can toggle the "retro" appearance of skillcapes in Settings, under Gameplay, Additional Options, Retro Skillcapes; or by speaking to the skill master that sells the cape. This makes the cape look as it did prior to the graphical update of the capes in 2015. Keepsaked capes can also be affected by this change.

Each cape has an individual emote that plays only when that cape is worn. Each cape also offers a perk specific to that cape, which is a positive effect that operates either passively or via activation, depending on the cape. Additionally, each of the skill capes offer a temporary level boost in their respective skill. Besides offering a temporary level boost in their respective skill, each cape also provides a boost to obtaining strange and/or golden rocks.

Once a player achieves true skill mastery in a skill (level 120, including virtual levels), they may also buy a Master cape of Accomplishment from the same skill master that the Cape of Accomplishment is bought from. Similarly, the Quest Cape has a master version for completing additional quest-related requirements, however the master version is sold by someone else. These capes are separate items and may be owned simultaneously with the regular Cape of Accomplishment, but they share many properties with the regular capes, such as the equipment bonuses, perks, emote (with a few exceptions), and skill boost.

Development history[edit | edit source]

The Capes of Accomplishment were formally released on 18 October 2006 after having been alluded to several times within the official forums, after Jagex had received many complaints from dedicated high-levelled players of not being able to have much to flaunt with. The capes' restriction to paying members has often been a source of debate on RuneScape.

On 2 November 2010, some skillcapes were updated with either a smaller or larger icon. On 5 September 2012 some skillcapes received an update which changed the icon on the back.

On 16 March 2015, all skillcapes were graphically updated, as well the option of attaching a hood to them being added. The main differences in the graphical update was the skill icon being updated and the frontal tassels and shoulder pads being removed. All trim and main colours remained similar to their previous state. On 7 April 2015, an update added the ability to toggle between the old and new skillcape designs, which can be done by talking to any of the masters. The Quest Cape wasn't updated together with other skillcapes; it was updated on 8 June 2015.

On 20 February 2017, each cape gained a unique perk, some of them passive and some of them requiring activation. Capes of Accomplishment may be consumed by the max, completionist, and trimmed completionist capes in order to unlock up to three of those effects. The perks are shared across all three capes.

Combat stats[edit | edit source]

Emote[edit | edit source]

Each cape comes with a special emote that can only be performed while wearing the cape, activated by selecting the Cape emote in the emote list. The emotes are meant to represent each cape's respective skill/quest achievements and differs between capes. Trimmed and retro versions of the capes share the same emote. The respective Master capes of Accomplishment also share this emote, with the exception of the Dungeoneering, Farming, Herblore, Necromancy, Invention, and Slayer master capes.

Skill boost[edit | edit source]

Wearing the cape and selecting the "Boost" option in the equipment menu temporarily boosts the player's effective level in the cape's skill by one, up to 100, or 120 if that skill trains to 120. This does not apply to the Quest Cape. The Constitution, Prayer, and Summoning capes have a one-minute cool-down period between uses of this effect. The boost effects from the capes can last from 2 seconds to 60 seconds, as with other Temporary skill boosts. For every cape the boost cannot be reactivated until the skill has dropped back to 99. When the player equips the cape, the boost automatically activates.

The following skills have no uses from the skill boost unless their level is temporarily decreased: Construction, Dungeoneering, Crafting, and Fletching.

Trimmed capes[edit | edit source]

An untrimmed skillcape trimming itself

Skill capes have two styles: regular and trimmed. If a player only has one level 99 skill, the cape will be in the regular style, with all of the cape having the same colour except for the icon. With more than one level 99 skill the cape will be trimmed—the band of material around the edge of the cape will be a different colour to the rest of the cape. There is no way to manually choose the style, as it is entirely dependent on the number of level 99 skills the player has. Once trimmed, a skill cape will never be untrimmed again. Regular skill capes will automatically be changed into the trimmed style the instant the player obtains a second level 99.

A player can keepsake a skillcape to retain the untrimmed skillcape as an override. After obtaining the first level 99, but keepsaking the skillcape of the first 99 before obtaining another level 99, will not alter the appearance of the keepsaked skillcape.

The exception here is the Quest Cape, which does not have a trimmed style, even if the player has two or more level 99 skills. It also does not count towards the two level 99 skills needed for a trimmed cape.

It is possible to trim a skill cape in a free-to-play world, provided that the player has one level 99, or they are wearing an untrimmed skill cape at the time.

Hoods[edit | edit source]

The cape of accomplishment hoods are bought together with the cape for 99,000 coins (or 92,000 with an activated Ring of Charos). The colour of the hood is the same as the untrimmed cape's base colour, and can also be worn without the cape and vice versa. The hoods can be attached to their respective capes by using them on capes. This process can be reversed at will.

Using the hood on a cape won't change any currently keepsaked cape's version.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • When attempting to use an augmentor on a hooded skillcape the message "You can't seem to work out how to augment that item." is displayed both above the player and in the chatbox. However if the hood is removed from the skillcape and the augmentor is used on either item the message "Nothing interesting happens." is displayed in the chatbox.
  • When capes of accomplishments are dropped on the floor, a hood appears at the top of the cape. However, the hood can be a separate item.
  • In the past, obtaining a skillcape ('Skill Mastery', as seen in the in-game skill guide) didn't state that it is members only. This has been changed.
  • Capes of accomplishments are created using Raharni wildcat fur due to its properties. This accounts for the price of the capes.
  • Before the Evolution of Combat, only trimmed capes had a prayer bonus, which was 4. Untrimmed capes did not have this. Now, both trimmed and untrimmed capes provide the same stats.
  • It was once possible to have a skillcape without level 99 in the respective skill if a player's stats are reset with Nastroth after the player purchases a skillcape. However, the player would need to have achieved level 99 in that skill again to wear the cape. This is no longer possible because once a skill is reset, the skillcape is removed from the player's inventory, bank, and player-owned house.
  • Skillcapes are level 60 armour, as they provide an armour bonus of 33.
  • The models of the retro Prayer, Divination, and Quest Capes differ slightly from other skillcapes. Prayer and Divination skillcapes stretch a bit further at the back, while Quest Cape's frontal tassels are further away from the body.
  • Skillcape perks were originally released on 20 February 2017. An update to the game on 6 August 2018 replaced the following perks with the current ones:
    • Agility: Gives a chance of double tickets from the Brimhaven Agility Arena. Stacks with the Karamja task set reward.
    • Constitution: Doubles life points regained over time.
    • Construction: Reduces the cost of creating planks.
    • Crafting: Thread is no longer needed when crafting.
    • Divination: Gives a chance of saving divination materials.
    • Firemaking: Activate to light a fire on the spot you're standing on.
    • Fletching: Gives a chance of automatically stringing a bow when fletching unstrung bows.
    • Hunter: Activate to give your Herblore Habitat vine plant the effects of its hunter potion.
    • Prayer: Imparts the same benefits as lit burners in a player-owned house.
    • Thieving: Lowers your stunned time when caught from 4.2 seconds to 3.
  • It is possible to switch the appearance of skillcapes on free worlds.
  • When asked to sell a Cape of Accomplishment, if the player is wearing an activated Ring of Charos, the sellers mention the cape is sold at a discounted "half price". The actual price is 92,000 coins, this is a reference to the experience required to attain level 92 in a skill, which is roughly half of what's required to attain level 99 in a non-elite skill.
  • When wearing an activated Ring of Charos, this will not discount the price of a level 120 master cape.
