The dwarves working in the Dwarven Mine use canaries to detect dangerous gases while mining. Canaries are sensitive to the gases, and so die as a result of exposure to them before they would be perceptible to the dwarves.

Trivia[edit | edit source]
- The canary is a reference to the real life practice used by many shaft miners (especially coal miners). The miners would carry the bird with them because it could take far less of the toxic gases than a human could, making it an early warning method.
