A black mask requires 10 Defence, 20 Strength, and 40 Combat to wear. Similar to the focus sight and hexcrest, when worn it gives the player a 12.5% Melee damage increase and 12.5% Melee accuracy bonus against their current Slayer task. Black masks are dropped by cave horrors and unspeakable horrors (level 58 Slayer required), found in the Mos Le'Harmless Caves. They can also be purchased from the Grand Exchange with either 0 or 10 charges.

The black mask has ten charges that are supposed to be invoked at random against any combat opponents, not just slayer task monsters. A charge reduces the opponent's Defence level by 3-10. However, currently black mask charges may be bugged and will not be used. Once the charges are gone, there is no way to recharge it, although its Attack and Strength bonuses remain after being uncharged. The charge is only lost when initiating combat, so fighting a single opponent cannot be used as a way of uncharging it. As of 2 November 2010, the charges can be removed with the "remove-charges" option. Note that the removal of charges is permanent and cannot be reversed.

Since the release of Smoking Kills, players have been allowed to craft a black mask and other slayer items into a slayer helmet, provided they had acquired the ability to make the helmets. The Slayer helmet is valued because it is one item which carries the effects of all the component parts (as well as the 12.5% damage bonus for each combat style, mentioned above), making it useful (and often necessary) against a wide variety of slayer monsters.

The Black Masks might be made of black stone, the same black stone which is often associated with Xau-Tak. The connection is seen through the cave horrors, which are affiliated with Xau-Tak, and their usage of the masks. The mask also shares traits with black stone arrows as both are capable of lowering an enemy's defence.

Combat stats[edit | edit source]

Damage analysis[edit | edit source]

The damage boost from any type of slayer helmet applies only to the variable portion (the damage between the ability's minimum and maximum hit) of damage. Typically, abilities have ability damage ranges where the maximum hit is 5 times the minimum hit. For example, for an ability with a damage range of 20% to 100%, the slayer helmet will not apply to first 20% of ability damage, but will modify the additional damage over that. With the exception of auto attacks, this means that slayer helmets will always provide a total lower damage increase than displayed.

Slayer helmets do not work on bleeds and burns.

  1. ^ "Standard abilities" are abilities where the maximum hit is 5 times the minimum hit.
    • Examples:
  2. ^ Due to the way the damage range of the second hit of Snap Shot is calculated, it does not receive the damage boost.
  3. ^ The damage range used is per hit. Each hit has the same damage range.
  4. ^ Both hits of Wild Magic have the same damage range.
  5. ^ The damage range for Omnipower cast while the player has the Igneous Kal-Mej or Igneous Kal-Zuk changes to 90%-180% per hit. However, the damage increase is exactly the same a regular Omnipower.
