Big shark detail.png

A big shark is an abnormally large raw shark caught while harpoon fishing at any harpoon/big net fishing spot. Since players can only get it while fishing for sharks, it requires 76 Fishing to catch. It is a rare catch and luck will not increase chances of obtaining one. Similar to the Big swordfish, the Big shark also has a chance of catching of approximately 0.02%, based on a sample of 219901 sharks caught where only 50 were big sharks.

Since the Big shark can be caught anywhere that sharks are caught, it may also be acquired while Swarm fishing. However, the odds of this happening before 76 Fishing are incredibly low.

To stuff the big shark, players can take it to the Taxidermist in Canifis. She will charge the player 5,000 coins and turn it into a stuffed shark. Once it's stuffed, players can mount it in their Skill Hall at 76 Construction, using a stuffed shark and 2 Mahogany planks, producing a Mounted shark.

When under the effects of a perfect or regular juju fishing potion (or perfect plus potion), the rate of catching a big shark is drastically reduced due to the ability to catch baron sharks. Likewise, the rate is further reduced if the player has enabled catching great white sharks in their aquarium in the player-owned house. This is because a roll for a baron or great white shark cannot also roll a big shark. To refer to the sample above, the 219,901 sharks caught in order to obtain the 50 big sharks would also generate 73,300 baron sharks and 109,950 great white sharks along the way if under these effects.

Based on another sample of 67,159 sharks caught along with 25,399 baron sharks where 14 were big sharks, the furnace perk does not consume big sharks, and a big shark cannot result from additional fish generated by the fury shark outfit or an analogous effect. A big shark catch may be doubled when fishing with a Dwarven fish extractor.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • When players catch a Big shark, they receive a message saying "You catch an enormous shark!" instead of the normal "You catch a shark."
  • When attempting to cook a Big Shark you will receive the normal XP and receive a normal cooked shark, so long as it is not burnt.
  • When it is taken to the Taxidermist, she will say "That's quite a fearsome shark! You've done everyone a service by removing it from the sea!"
