The location of the research notes table where research is performed

Research is a part of Archaeology during which players can send research teams on expeditions and acquire materials, Archaeology experience, and sometimes artefacts.

The research tutorial is unlocked by reaching the assistant qualification; the tutorial is started by managing the research notes table in the Exam Centre at the Archaeology Campus. After the tutorial players are required to use chronotes to pay researchers for their work by using the research notes. In the case an expedition is terminated before completion, the chronotes that were paid to send the research team will be forfeit and no experience, artefacts, or materials will be gained to compensate for elapsed time.

General Research[edit | edit source]

General Research interface

After speaking with a dig site's manager, players can begin general research expeditions to the dig site. These expeditions will return after a chosen length of time, with options of 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, 8 hours, 12 hours, and 24 hours before any speed modifiers. The XP rewards and chronotes costs are scaled linearly based upon the selected time. The cost of general research increases with the player's Archaeology level and each site has a modifier related to the level required to start there.[1]

It is recommended to complete special research expeditions first if any are available, as these can be done only once and provide proportionally better rewards than general research expeditions.

The Archaeology experience/hour for general research is listed below (Experience and chronotes cost scale by 5% and 10% of Kharid-et's base xp/cost, for research in the Infernal Source / Everlight and Stormguard Citadel / Warforge respectively). The Stormguard / Warforge column is left blank below level 70 since neither dig site is available before that level.

At level 50 Archaeology Kharid-et Dig Site general research costs 250 chronotes per hour, and Infernal Source Dig Site and Everlight Dig Site cost 262 chronotes per hour.

At level 76 Archaeology Kharid-et Dig Site general research costs 380 chronotes per hour, Infernal Source Dig Site and Everlight Dig Site cost 399 chronotes per hour, and Stormguard Citadel Dig Site and Warforge Dig Site cost 418 chronotes per hour.

In addition to Archeology experience, materials required to restore the damaged artefacts obtainable from the dig site are rewarded, and more rarely damaged artefacts from the dig site.

Special Research[edit | edit source]

Special Research interface

While exploring the various dig sites, players will find studies that can be researched by sending the research team. These often give experience as well as an artefact from that dig site.

Each special research expedition can only be completed once. Special research progress and information about them can found in the Archaeology journal.

All the special research expeditions have a base duration of 40 minutes, except the tutorial expedition Mysterious Monolith: Existence, which reads 30 minutes on the interface but actually completes instantly and Mysterious Monolith: Architecture, which takes 30 minutes. The player's base level must meet the requirement in order to send an expedition; temporary boosts such as cups of soil tea do not work.

Completing all the special research in one of the following sections unlocks a corresponding achievement.

Players can only hire researchers that are a tier below their current qualification.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • The "Cell, a Door" research may be a reference to the UK television production company, Celador. The name, with two homonyms in apposition, also resembles lines from the song Do-Re-Mi.
  • The "Requiescat in Pace" research is Latin for "rest in peace" (commonly abbreviated, R.I.P.), in keeping with the Latin theme of Kharid-et.
  • The "Where There's Smoke" research is a reference to the English idiom "Where there's smoke, there's fire".
  • The "Abandon All Hope" research is a quote from Dante's Inferno, where the gate to hell bears the inscription "Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate" (Abandon all hope, ye who enter here).
  • The "Who Dis?" research may be a reference to the "New phone, who dis?" meme.
  • The "Lions and Unicorns and Centaurs, Oh My!" research is a reference to Dorothy's line in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, "Lions and tigers and bears! Oh my!"
  • The "Ode to a Midsummer Morning" research may be a reference to Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream.
  • The "Stadio Ga Ga" research is a reference to the Queen song Radio Ga Ga.
  • The "Like Clockwork" research is a reference to the English idiom.
  • The "Deer-ly Departed" research is a pun on the phrase "dearly departed", a respectful way of referring to those who have passed away.
  • The "Back to the Drawing Board" research is a reference to the English idiom.
  • The "The Aetherium Giant" research may be a reference to the 1999 film The Iron Giant.
  • The "The Howling Man" research shares its name with an episode of the 1960s television series The Twilight Zone.
